Reader Highlight: Kenny Peterson
This Reader Highlight is dedicated to a friend of mine named Kenny Peterson . Kenny and I lived in the same building for a period of time and have spoken at a regional leadership conference together. He’s a super deep individual with a lot of knowledge about life and business.?
Kenny is a former NFL player who has now turned into a successful businessman involved in many different ventures. He played high school football at McKinley High School in Canton and later played college football at Ohio State. He was then drafted by the Greenbay Packers and then the Denver Broncos Football Club . Now retired, Kenny is focusing his efforts on conceptualizing and developing businesses with innovative products, and services resulting in maximum ROls.
One piece of advice I’ll always remember from Kenny is the value of silence. One time he told me that in order to solve problems if he was struggling to make a decision business-wise, he would not listen to the radio in the car at all. In the silence of the drives, he was able to process things and make a decision.?
I still use this tactic in my daily life. Anytime I’m feeling overwhelmed, I take some time to drive in silence. Amazing how much of a positive effect there is.?

Marketing Psychology with Phill Agnew
As a marketer that spends a lot of his time researching best practices and executing strategies on a daily basis, it’s hard for me to enjoy listening to podcasts about marketing. That being said, this episode of The Marketing Millennials blew me away with how many simple (but extremely effective) psychology principles were explained in this episode.
Here are examples of two principles that Phill Agnew covers in this episode.
The Scarcity Principle
The scarcity Principle is another psychological concept that refers to the tendency of individuals to desire things that are perceived as rare or in short supply. Use the scarcity principle in your marketing campaigns by creating limited-time offers or showcasing limited availability of products or services. This can create a sense of urgency and increase the perceived value of your offerings.
The Anchoring Effect
The anchoring effect is the tendency of individuals to rely too heavily on the first piece of information presented to them when making decisions. Use the anchoring effect in your marketing campaigns by strategically pricing your products or services. For example, by showcasing a high-priced item next to a lower-priced item, the lower-priced item may seem like a better deal in comparison.

Shoutout to Brad White + Song Exploder
Yesterday I was on a Zoom call with a fellow IndeAlum, Brad White . We were comparing building our businesses to the art of making music, and how important it is to be aware of all the different layers in order to find harmony.?
Turns out, there’s actually a podcast dedicated to interviewing artists and tracking the journey of how each sound layer in a song came to be. Basically taking a song from idea to full record through the eyes of the artist. Super super cool - and I’m already addicted.
Each episode is produced and edited by host and creator Hrishikesh Hirway in Los Angeles. Using the isolated, individual tracks from a recording, Hrishikesh asks artists to delve into the specific decisions that went into creating their work. He then edits the interviews, removing his side of the conversation and condenses the story to be tightly focused on how the artists brought their songs to life. Guests include Fleetwood Mac, Billie Eilish, U2, Metallica, Solange, Lorde, Yo-Yo Ma, The Roots, Bon Iver, and more. Here’s the full list of episodes .
The show has been featured at the Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Noise Pop Festival, and Moogfest. It won’t take you many episodes to understand why.
10/10 - highly recommend?
“In the world of beautifully produced podcasts, Song Exploder is the beacon. Short version: It’s a show that dissects a song. Long version: It’s a show filled with serious lines of honesty, cinematic production and peeks inside the creative process.” — New York Times
