I had coffee with a fellow book enthusiast recently and he asked me for some book recommendations.

I shared with him that at the inaugural CITS Book Review Festival last month, there were five interesting books reviewed – from learning how to assess the personalities of people, a framework for reading effectively, applying neurolinguistic programming to various aspects of management, the life story of prolific inventor and entrepreneur James Dyson to a moving memoir of the current USA President Joe Biden.

He was pleasantly surprised to learn about our movement to nurture a vibrant reading culture among our IT colleagues. ?? Since we started the “read and share two books a year” initiative in 2018, I have received feedback from colleagues, sharing with me about rediscovering their joy for reading and how this new habit has benefited them e.g., broadening their knowledge, taking them to places and times they have never been before and making them a more confident person.

I congratulate my colleagues for their continuous efforts in reading and learning, and a special shoutout to the five colleagues (Chua Chet Shiu, Edwin Goh, Jasmin Ong, Poh Foong Gek and Wong Foo Lam) who took their assignment seriously, diligently prepared very engaging slides and shared their enriching book reviews with the rest of us at the CITS Book Review Festival on 23rd September.

This is a habit that needs continuous nudging and encouragement. Let us continue to Read Widely and Learn Together!

Hi Alvin, this is such a great initiative; any plans to expand it to the rest of the colleagues in NTU? Personally, I would be interested!

I always admire how you keep up with reading despite your hectic schedule! #mustlearnfromtheguru

The fact that your staff read with an objective to share makes them active readers (like active listeners), digesting, asking questions, hypothesizing, clarifying … to distill the insights and lessons learnt that could be applied in both personal and professional life.

I wish I have the time to read a book a day...does anyone though ?? I'm always hesitant to start a book coz I cant put one down once I start...then other life's chores like laundry, dishes, kids, fulltime job would be on hold ??
