Reactive or ProActive
Over the last decade #PassiveFireProtection has occupied a good portion of my mind. Along with a few others, I feel that #PassiveFireProtection does not get its due respect. I have wondered why?
The quick definition does have something to do with it, I feel.
Groups of Industry Experts / Leaders
I also feel that the concerted effort to promote anything requires large sets of people to speak jointly for a common cause. This requires efforts of bringing people together.
The number of businesses in Designing & Manufacturing solutions related to #ActiveFireProtection have probably been a much smaller set as compared with the corresponding numbers in #PassiveFireProtetcion.
Bodies are few: Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) , Associa??o Brasileira de Prote??o Passiva Contra Incêndio (ABPP) Firestop Contractors International Association EAPFP - European Association for Passive Fire Protection ! I could not find more, (or maybe I am not aware of them). Is there one in America? Is there any other?
Exhibitions, Conferences and Awareness
Most of the shows focus on stuff around #ActiveFire! Is it because they are more expensive? or Require more engineering and maintenance?

But the concerted efforts to drive a homogenized approach of implementation across countries, specifications and authorities is probably done less!
New Nomenclature
With the increasing buzz lately about passive fire protection, I was very excited and pleased to attend and be part of probably the worlds first Exhibition/Show dedicated to #PassiveFirePreotection in India!
NürnbergMesse Group & NürnbergMesse India Pvt. Ltd. created a new show called Fire Safe Build India (FSBI) and it is here that during a panel discussion this matter was discussed and a New Name of talked about
So, not claiming that this name is being suggested by me as I forgot who brought it up, but it came up that as #PassiveFireProtection is actually the First Line of Defense to a fire and it should be renamed as ProActive Fire Protection
Though the discussion was in January of this year, it continues to strike in my mind whenever #FireProtection and #FireSafety are being discussed.
So, what do you think is a better approach to Fire Safety Reactive or Proactive ?

1 年The problem with quick searches on Google is that the unnuanced meaning can be thrown up. When in doubt, or wanting more, I search the etymology. Passive “late 14c., passif, of matter, "capable of being acted upon;" etc etymonline.com/word/passive Proactive and reactive are also in that. imo these only apply to that which ‘acts’ or is activated, rather than just is.

1 年Although me being the proponent of passive fire protection, I would be careful to say that it “is actually the First Line of Defense to a fire” to name it ‘proactive fire protection’. Sprinklers activate immediately on detection of smoke n fire. Doors (or other passive fire protection systems) will restrict its spread after its build up. Besides, active fire protection guys will have strong objection to renaming passive as proactive ??

1 年I was wondering if you were going to go a bit German on this... Static Activated Putting fire doors, curtains and shutters, vents and dampers, in with all suppression as activated on a detection system that triggers an alarm sequence.

1 年A very interesting and niche protection system for steel mastered and controlled by an absolutely exclusive club of manufacturers.
