Thinking about the phrase “reach your potential” this often brings up conflicting emotions of wasting your potential, or not living up to your expectations.
You may be unsure how to reach your full potential, which only causes additional self-conflict and self-doubt, sometimes worry or negative self-talk.
You’ve done the YouTube videos, read the books, attended a training course, but you’re still struggling with the question inside your head, can I do it, when will I know, how will I know, my does it feel so bloody hard etcetera…
I know how you feel, I think we all have at some point in our life,
BUT, don’t stress if this describes you and here is why?
These thoughts, feelings and emotions are common among ambitious people –people who strive for success, people who want to fulfil their true potential but are at a bit of a loss of exactly how to do it.
Another reason not to stress just yet: human beings are full of untapped power and potential, it’s our mindset or beliefs that limit this power of potential, we do have The Power Within to reach our true potential.
Consider the human mind, the complexity of how it works.
Some of the smartest people in the world are at a complete loss as to the inner workings of the thought process, the power of vibration.
So, complex is the human brain that many scientists have labelled it as the most extraordinary thing in the known universe, the most powerful machine known to mankind!
The brain creates more electrical impulses in a day than that all the phones in the world combined in the same time frame.
To most, we are burdened with the thought of limitation of time, I don’t have enough time, time is running out, it takes too long…
While it is true when it comes to time, we just don’t know how much time we have left on this earth.
Both History and Psychology have shown us that our life span is in no way indicative of the quality of life we will ultimately have.
Acknowledging this fact means making the most of the time we have, utilising the most out of the days we do have left.
And one way we do this is by fulfilling our true potential.
This article focuses on seven habits of people who fulfil their potential utilise and practise daily.
Part of the journey (and it is a journey!) to reaching your true potential involves realising that doing so for the sake of money or possessions is fruitless.
Money gives you choice, but not purpose, for me it’s the pursuit of purpose that creates the money to make better choices and help more people achieve their potential
Materialistic things will come and go, as do the satisfaction that comes with them, although making you feel good at the time. What matters most is your person you have become, what lies within your heart, your compassion and desire to help others, to leave the world a better place than when you entered it.
If you study the names of those forever etched in the books of history – Leonardo Di Vinci, Mother Teresa, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., Mohammad Ali – you realise that they all lived for a purpose.
In the case of Franklin, this purpose was becoming a statesman.
For Ali, a larger-than-life sportsman and peace activist.
While their livelihoods, personality, education, and background were all different, their impact on those who knew them as subjectively similar.
You needn’t be an inventor, statesman, scientist, or sportsperson to fulfil your true potential.
There are millions of “normal” people out there who are proving themselves and living a life full of potential every day.
How?
By following these 7 success habits:
1. LIVING EACH DAY WITH PURPOSE
Surprise, surprise! Number one is so for a reason – and cannot be emphasised enough! Purpose gives life meaning. Purpose gets you out of bed every morning. Without purpose, life remains meaningless.
A clearly-defined purpose awakens the dormant powers within you to achieve that purpose. If you can create a vision in your mind’s eye, you can live the life you desire.
2. MEDITATION AND/OR MINDFULNESS PRACTICE
Meditation, or mindfulness practice, to me is about decreasing emotional reactivity so you can proactively create your day and create your life; versus, just being a walking reflex that sometimes screws up,”
3. A MORNING ROUTINE
The reason behind a good morning routine is simple: by using less wasted energy in the morning, you can conserve it for more demanding, purpose-driven tasks later in the day.
A good healthy morning routine is more than just going through the motions. You must implement the right habits, including exercise, eating, meditation, planning, and accomplishing your most important task (your high payoff activities). Successful people also spend quality time with their family or by themselves (chill time).
4. COMMITMENT TO MASTERY
Fulfilment of your true potential and striving for mastery are two peas in the same pod. You can’t separate one from the other. Mastery in this sense means to put forth the needed effort, time, concentration, and skill to do the best work possible. Only by fully committing your capabilities to the work at hand can you create mastery of any task, process or system. Only by creating mastery can you fulfil your potential.
People often make things harder than they have to be by not giving their full attention to the task at hand.
5. STAYING MOTIVATED
Motivation is probably one of the most overused but underutilised words in the business world today. The common denominator between people who live a life full of potential and those who make excuses, lies in their motivation to strive for more, their motives and reasons for taking action or not taking action.
Speak to a great leader or seek to understand a high performing individual, you will consistently find that there is one common denominator that contributed to their success: the mastery of motivation.
They have a Motivational Intelligence framework of no excuses, no blame, high self-confidence, a positive, resilient attitude, laser focus on goals and an understanding of comfort zones that hold no real purpose.
6. DOING THE RIGHT THING
People who truly fulfil their potential are benefactors of society. They are committed to doing the right thing, every time, whether “profitable” or not. Perhaps this habit is the best one to illustrate the gulf between success and fulfilment.
Someone who isn’t particularly keen on acting ethically can achieve success from an outsider’s perspective – but they’ll probably never be happy in the long term. Fulfilled people, on the other hand, are both successful and happy – in no small part because they commit to acting for the benefit of everyone, including society as a whole.
7. MAINTAINING FOCUS & CONSISTENCY
There is no way to reach your full potential without a great deal of focus and consistency. Things happen in life that will test your commitment to your purpose. Whether or not you can keep on depends a great deal on where you place your attention. If you maintain laser-like focus despite the obstacles, you have a much greater chance of fulfilling your potential.
When something negative happens, such as a setback, or failure, allow it to take its natural course. Be upset if you want. Get angry. Resent the situation. But then redirect your focus and “keep on keeping on!” The more you focus on what you want and away from what you don’t want, the more you gain positive traction.
People who fulfil their potential do this as a habit. They may get pissed off beyond belief, but they have an uncanny ability to keep their eye on the ball, accept the failure and move on.
My Final Thoughts:
By now you should have a solid understanding as to the sacrifices required to reach your true potential. So now seems like a good time to understand that a fulfilling life full of purpose doesn’t mean a continual struggle.
The idea that the path to realising your true potential is having a life filled with struggle needs to STOP.
It’s because of this mindset of misperception that most people hold about themselves they end up never reaching their true potential and living a life full of regret.
The truth is that while setbacks are inevitable, they are much easier to overcome through a commitment to your purpose. Purpose trumps worry, doubt, and struggle every time. Be passionate about what you want, learn as much as you can, stay focused, and you will realise your true potential!
