Reach isn't everything. Also, the Hulk.
I'm currently sitting in my room at Luxor looking out my window (which is conveniently at the base of the Sphinx's ass) and it got me thinking of another time I was in Vegas working a booth for a convention I was attending.
I had decided to take a walk around the enormous convention center and see what the other vendors were offering. I found myself wandering taking everything in, not sure as to what to focus on as there was so much to take in. And then, I saw something that truly caught my attention.
Lou 'God Damn' Ferrigno. The Hulk himself. And he was walking towards me.
Well into his forties by this time, the man was still a beast. I was impressed. So, I did what anyone would do when someone famous passes by them in a massive crowded convention center, I yelled out to him.
"LOU!"
He kept walking.
"LOU FERRIGNO!!"
Kept walking.
"LOU GOD DAMN FERRIGNO!!!"
And still kept walking. I was offended. I mean who doesn't respond to some stranger yelling their name. So, I did what anyone would do when someone famous passes by them in a crowded convention center. I hurled some insults.
"KEEP WALKING LOU. ASSHOLE. IT AIN'T THE 80s ANYMORE YOU HASBEEN. YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY ANYONE RECOGNIZED YOU."
And with that, I went back to my booth. Upon my arrival, I informed the rest of the party of my encounter and how rude Lou Ferrigno was, to which they responded with,
"Dave, Lou Ferrigno is deaf."
The moral of this story is that regardless of your message and how well it's crafted (or in my case, wasn't) it will most likely fall on deaf ears.
Facebooks Business pages originally generated around 20% organic reach when the platform was new, but nowadays it's generally less than a percent. Meaning that regardless of how good your content is, it's most likely falling on deaf ears (or in Facebook's case, no one's feed).
So, am I trying to say that the only way to get your message across is by paying for it? Well, yes and no. Regardless of the platform, Facebook, Google, etc, won't stop you from spending money with them. The key is to have something compelling to say.
You see, I could have run him down and tapped Lou on the shoulder and said hi, but past that, I had nothing to say. I would have just gawked at him and say hi and maybe reminded him that he was Lou Ferrigno.
So, the long and short of it is this; you can try to chase down your audience and get their attention, but without something compelling to say after that, you're just some other asshole yelling at a deaf man in Vegas.
