Re-writing the Text Books Every Week
Every week, every month, I hear of a new revelation that progresses our understanding of how our brains work. Whether that be a new theory on how we feel emotion, a new understanding of what goes on in our brains when we fall asleep, or further understanding of how our experience and genetics interact to shape who we are.
Every time I attend a neuroscience conference I am wonderstruck when listening to the speakers, and when talking with my fellow attendees, not only by how neuroscience is continually rewriting the textbooks on how my brain, and your brain, is able to create the words we speak. the movements we make, the ideas we generate, and the feelings we experience, but also by the way these new snippets of information are increasingly being used in practical ways in so many applications and industries.
So what?
But why should you, as a coach care about this? How can knowing about the inner biology of the human brain really help you become better in the work you do?
Because neuroscience helps us to explain why people think, feel, and act in the way they do. It helps to explain the differences between people, their fears, their motivations, and the biological drivers of who they are as a person. And yes, although knowing the intricate details of how a brain cell works might not seem that useful to you (although I think it is always good to know about bit about the fundamentals), knowing how the brain works from a big picture perspective; how thinking and emotions interact; and how the brain’s neurochemistry regulates your mental state, IS important in your coaching conversations.
Not knowing doesn’t mean you can’t do your job as a coach well. But knowing means you can do your job better.
Think differently
Not just because you have greater knowledge, but because that new knowledge might cause you to question differently, to stop you thinking along mental paths well-traveled and give you a different perspective from which to approach your client interactions.
And although neuroscience often gets a bad name for being full of complicated jargon which is inaccessible to anyone who isn’t an expert in it, it doesn’t have to be. That is simply a matter of linguistics. Neuroscience for Coaches breaks down the brain into manageable bite-size chunks and relates them to the day-to-day practicalities of coaching. It helps to blow out the water some of the neuromyths, to cut through the neurobabble which can cloud the true facts, and ensures that you know in real-time what is going on inside the neuroscience laboratories scattered around the globe.
Where the future lies
Our Neuroscience for Coaches Virtual Learning Programme gives you the inside track. It distills down many hundreds of papers into manageable chunks. It offers the opportunity to become forward-thinking in your coaching approach; to satisfy your curiosity by delving into the fascinating and fruitful field of neuroscience, and to develop an understanding of how neuroscientific insights can be usefully applied in your coaching encounters to further enhance the way you are able to coax out the best in people.
