Re-tooling a combat technique for civil "battle space" likes Wildfire Fighting

Of all types of crisis response, cohesive teaming during a #wildfire #incident demands and extremely skill Team of Teams. If interaction and #communication between teams fails, lives, property and our #environment are at serious risk. When Conversa Corps was first conceived, we began searching for existing crisis response communities dealing with a fierce "enemy".

Why this kind of community? Conversa Corps is dedicated to adapting proven tactics coordinating teams in virtual chat space, developed over 20 years in military combat, and "re-shaping" them into tools for communities like the wildfire community. If this way of doing battle works so well for military operations, surely, it can be used to help NGOs, government, and nonprofit teams work together as they all work to help humanity and the planet in need.

Here are the battle space similarities:

  • Fierce, unpredictable "enemy" can be a geopolitical group, and individual or mother nature's own wildland fire, hurricane, earthquake, pandemic.... etc.
  • The "enemy" is deadly and very capable of taking lives...quickly.
  • Numerous teams, agencies, organizations want to help, but often fail to properly interact or even find out about each other when they need to coordinate in remote/online/virtual spaces. Thus they often default to silo'd "in person" coordination, leaving out those who can assist from afar.
  • Those who represent their teams are often unable to handle fast-paced, multi-channel, complex conversations involving all aspects of the "battle". Battle chat is a whole other level of wild. They need a Facilitator to guide them.
  • The tools, web-based chat in group channels, is similar. They're simple, but the human behavior within requires proper coaching. And it's not about tools, it's about behavior.

In 2022, Conversa Corps assisted in piloting a Slack workspace where the #wildland fire community can voluntarily come together to gain the teaming experience that we've seen over and over in the military. The Wildfire Community Slack workspace is a "deployment" that we'll continue to grow as we gather community members to:

  • Gather and share in channels broken out by operational jurisdiction, region, or general topic.
  • Allow members to discover each other, observe and jump into conversations and mingle with their peers, both known and newly acquainted.
  • Converse.....talk.....share what we know, don't know, and think
  • Build trust over time, camaraderie, and professional relationships.

In time, this Wildfire Community will be blended with the greater #Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Recovery community. In that community teams from all specialties will be able to build their shared understanding, best practices, and resource. Then we all "deploy" to a crisis, with trusted team mates we've already discovered in the crowd. That's our plan.

Stay tuned to the Conversa Corps page for more information about how to join the Wildfire Community and future HA/DR communities we will deploy and support for others.
