Welcome to the special edition of Feel Brand You.

I`m so glad that our paths crossed and you are reading these lines.

Feel Brand You is an almost weekly dose of inspiration about branding and business building from my point of view, a branding photographer.

Today is a special edition delivered by a guest expert, Angela Mercer . I met Angela via a Membership where she was delivering a masterclass about improving your money mindset. I have intensively been working on my money mindset for the last 3 years and I listened to many mentors but I really liked Angela's approach. I asked her to write a guest article for my LinkedIn audience as I know her wisdom would benefit many of you.

5 Transformative Steps to Kickstart Your Relationship with Money

Guest article by Angela Mercer

Do you ever feel trapped in a cycle of stress and scarcity with your finances? No matter what you do, there's never enough to go around. Money influences everything from your home, work, and creativity to your leisure, vision, and spirituality.

It can bring joy or misery, depending on your relationship with it. Your relationship with money starts with self-awareness, not numbers because you can't change what you’re unwilling to see. When you pay attention to your negative thoughts, words and feelings about money and change the way you respond to it, you begin to open the floodgates to greater financial abundance.

The money in your bank account today reflects your past thoughts, habits, and behaviours. It doesn't define you unless you let it. You are not your bank account or your current results. You can change your financial future starting today, by changing your relationship to it.

As a female entrepreneur, if you're not making the money, you know you're capable of, it's easy to assume you need to do more. But the truth is, we are all influenced by two million years of brain development that says in order to survive, we need to work harder. This couldn't be further from the truth. When you are worried, stressed, and exhausted, you push away the very thing you want: more money.

Money is also still relatively new to women. Until 1975, women couldn't have a bank account in their name, and it was only after the Sex Discrimination Act of 1976 that women could apply for a loan. It's no surprise that many women feel they aren't reaching their financial potential. If this is you, take heart.

Here are five transformative mindset shifts and practical tips to help you manage your finances better and enhance your relationship with money. Your finances can change as soon as you do!

1: Realign Your Financial Intentions - Know Your Why

Why do you want to increase your income? It's simply not enough to aim for a specific amount each month. Identifying your deepest motivation is crucial for lasting change and action because it will give you the courage and determination to overcome any challenges. Understanding the intangible reasons behind your desire to increase your income, is essential for building a strong relationship with money. When your financial goals are aligned with your core values and desires, making and managing money becomes more meaningful and fulfilling.

Consider your why:

Is it to spend more time with your loved ones?

Is it to feel at peace?

Is it to achieve time and money freedom?

Is it to make a bigger impact on the planet?

Spend a few minutes each day visualising your life with your ‘why’ achieved. This process reinforces your energy alignment with your financial vision, strengthening your positive relationship with money.

2: Cultivate Awareness of Your Thoughts, Feelings, and Reactions

About Yourself: Keep a journal to observe your inner dialogue. Are you telling yourself you’re not good enough, worthy enough, or deserving enough? Notice if you feel anxious, guilty, or disappointed with yourself. Reframe negative thoughts positively in a way that feels authentic to you. Instead of jumping from “I don’t deserve this” to “I do deserve it,” which can be too much of a stretch, try: “I’m choosing to know I deserve this” or “I’m taking steps every day to become a success.”

About Others: Challenge your perceptions that others are more successful or have had more opportunities than you. Remember, everyone has their own struggles. Reflect on what you believe about your clients. Do you think they won't pay your prices or see the value in your offer? When you recognise your value, others will recognise it too. Shifting your expectations to believe people will invest in themselves and you, transforms transactional relationships into transformational ones.

About Money: Observe and challenge your beliefs about money. For example, if you think money is hard to come by, ask yourself “Is this 100% true?” and then look for evidence to prove it isn’t true, such as: “No, it’s not 100% true because on my birthday I received a sum of money and I didn’t have to work for that!”

About the World: Focus on abundance rather than scarcity. Avoid getting caught up in negative news about the economy or cost-of-living crises, as this perpetuates a mindset of lack. Instead, look for examples of growth and opportunities, especially in economic downturns. Remember, small businesses can thrive during a recession. By cultivating awareness and challenging negative thoughts and beliefs, you can transform your relationship with money and create strong foundations for your financial success.

3: Change the Way You Talk about Money

Your relationship with money is like your relationship with people. It is to be nurtured. When you are happy and you talk kindly to others and about others, people will want to be around you. When you are fed up and talk badly to, or about others, then you’re probably the last person people want to be around! No one likes gossip and the same is true for money! The subconscious mind takes everything you say literally, which means the words you choose have a significant impact on your feelings and beliefs about money. Using negative language reinforces a scarcity mindset, while positive language fosters a sense of abundance and financial well-being. Phrases like “I can’t afford it” or “There isn’t enough money to go around” perpetuate feelings of lack, and your subconscious will work to validate these beliefs. Instead, use empowering language such as "I choose to spend my money elsewhere" or "There is always more than enough to meet my needs." This subtle shift can transform your perspective from limitation and lack to one of empowerment and possibility.

4: Money Loves Attention - Schedule Weekly Money Dates:

A money date is a time scheduled to review your personal and business finances. Over time, these dates provide a realistic view of your financial past, present, and future. They help you identify growth areas, maintain good habits, and stop unproductive ones. This insight enables you to set financial goals, build sales expectations, and create a strategic plan, essential for high earners. Be intentional and make your dates enjoyable by playing music or using a favourite journal and pen to link pleasure to managing your finances. If your energy is depressed and fed up then money isn’t going to want to be around you! Seeing this time as an investment in yourself and your future is vital for a healthy relationship with money and achieving financial success.

5: Gratitude to Supercharge Your Finances

Gratitude isn't just good for your soul; it's great for your wallet too! Whether you have a little, or a lot of money in your bank account right now, when you appreciate your current finances, you create a strong foundation for receiving more. Each evening, write down at least one financial blessing you've enjoyed throughout the day. This could be as simple as a new client, money to pay a bill, a coffee bought by a friend, or even finding a coin on the pavement. The key here is to truly ‘feel’ grateful for the money you already have and it will naturally support you to feel richer, leading to peace of mind around your finances and a growing bank account.

Your relationship with money is deeply intertwined with your energetic state. By adopting these five steps, you are not just adjusting numbers; you are transforming how you think, feel and act with and around money. When you change from the inside out, your external circumstances will begin to change too.
