RDLF News: Issue 7
The Reva & David Logan Foundation
Chicago family foundation providing strategic grants supporting social justice, the arts and investigative journalism.
Happy Thanksgiving! In this issue, we highlight the excellent work of two of our grantees. You'll also find our partners in the news, opportunities for artistic organizations and individuals, and some stellar articles from our Journalism grantees.?
Grantee Profile: Project Onward
Meet Project Onward , one of our newest grantees. Senior Program Officer Jessie Mott first discovered the organization when she saw an amazing drawing of a vicious poodle by?George Zuniga, one of their artists, hanging in a friend's home. Since we began our partnership less than a year ago, we've been impressed with not only the enchanting and prolific artwork coming from their studios, but also the holistic care of their artists, who they regard as family.
When we first met with the team at Project Onward, they expressed a need from the artists for more individualized support. In response, we awarded a grant for a staff position whose primary responsibility would be to coordinate internal and external support services for artists. Kim Jacobs, LCPC took on the Case Manager position after having regularly volunteered with the organization. In an email to our team, however, Kim said that she doesn't consider herself just a Case Manager. "Depending on my day," she said, "I can wear many hats."
POV on PBS
POV (a cinema term for “point of view”) is television’s longest-running showcase for independent nonfiction films. POV premieres 14-16 of the best, boldest and most innovative programs every year on PBS. Since 1988, POV has presented over 500 films to public television audiences across the country. POV films are known for their intimacy, their unforgettable storytelling and their timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues. POV is a program of our grantee?American Documentary.
Since 2016, the Foundation has supported American Documentary in a variety of ways, from building their archive, to supporting the annual gala, to being the founding funder of the POV Shorts program. Feedback from PBS programmers indicates how much they rely on their thoughtfully curated and often provocative episodes throughout the year. In recent years, we switched from providing restricted support of specific programs to providing General Operating Support in addition to continued support of POV Shorts. We saw that the majority of AmDoc’s funding was restricted, therefore restricting their freedom to expand and pivot as needed to support filmmakers.
