Will RCS be the end of the Communication App’s?
Is RCS (Rich Communications Services) set to capitalise on the mobile messaging boom due to the potential its technology offers?
RCS is a GSMA-backed technology for advanced messaging services built on an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) backbone, including video calling, presence, photo sharing and enhanced messaging.
New features such as call pre-announcements, sending files, maybe even payments, full VoLTE support are about to come soon. You might say that the other messaging apps do that already to some degree!
Well that is partly true but RCS is not an app and doesn’t need to be downloaded as it comes with most Android handsets, at least from the vendors who signed up with GSMA, and then there is Google behind it and all its resources and power to make it happen.
Imagine you have your entire address book and all calling and messaging features in one embedded function with a RED and GREEN button only synced with any of your contacts on any phone worldwide, an Android phone that is?
Why would you keep managing three to four different apps to deal with all your contacts communication preferences if you can just use that one tool that comes with your phone?
Well, we will see the outcome in the not too distant future but the fortunes for mobile operators seem to be looking up!
What do you think? please share your thoughts and ideas here!

I can't see this happening. The operators/GSMA are too slow. OTTs are much more agile. We all know what happened to the Joyn initiative... Pretty much nothing.

8 年Yes that's all they doing saving the SMS.... Gaint revenue pull..... Great read
Ahmed Shinau A Gadir agree that this has not picked up .. There are inherent advantages of security and privacy with RCS where this can differentiate in a crowded apps market especially for enterprise communications What's app for example used by members of an enterprise can be dangerous ...

8 年RCS maybe be the sell-off for operators by system vendors - it doesn't really seem to have any momentum as of now. Handset/device capability standardisation is the biggest hurdle for RCS. A better question will be "Will communication Apps end the RCS dream?"
