RCL Reflections

Martha rails at Jesus, “If you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Even though this is what we often do in the face of sickness, tragedy and death, All Saints Day is a peculiar day to rail at Jesus. On this day, we typically remember, reflect, grieve, appreciate and give thanks for those we love who have died, either in the last year or previously. In many churches, names are read, candles lit, bells tolled, and the tears begin to flow. It’s somber business. Yet Martha’s scold reminds us as clearly as Jesus’ actions that death is not an acceptable outcome for God. The promise of Isaiah, repeated in Revelation and made clear by Jesus’ action reveals God’s penchant for life in all of its fullness. Now Lazarus is unbound and set free upon the world, as are we all.
