RCAF Modernization in 2024

One hundred years ago, the Royal Canadian Air Force emerged out of the First World War and the industrial age. While the nature of war has remained constant over millennia, it was the ability to produce weapons like the submarine, the tank and the airplane in significant numbers that irrevocably changed its character. These innovations made war possible at a speed and scale that has only increased as other domains have been added including space, cyber and information. The potential for conflict now transcends the physical, and its reach and speed largely negate any privilege Canada once had due to its geography.

DEW Engineering Joins VARD Marine’s Team Vigilance Preferred Supplier Program

At CANSEC 2023, Vard Marine Inc. (VARD), a prominent subsidiary of Fincantieri, proudly introduced VIGILANCE, its innovative solution aimed at replacing the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) aging Kingston Class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDV). This initiative falls under Pillar Two of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), and VARD has partnered with Thales Canada, Ontario Shipyards, SH Defence, and Fincantieri to ensure the RCN receives a state-of-the-art, lightweight, and flexible military asset. VIGILANCE is designed to surpass the capabilities of the MCDV and Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV), especially in the challenging littoral battlespace, where it is expected to play a crucial role.

Modernizing Canada’s Defence: A New Era at CFB Bagotville

As part of Canada’s ambitious push to modernize its defence capabilities, significant progress is being made at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Bagotville in Quebec. The base, already a key hub for the nation’s defense, is now the site of a major construction project—a new Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) facility. On August 12, 2024, Parliamentary Secretary Marie-France Lalonde, representing Minister of National Defence Bill Blair, officially announced the commencement of this pivotal development.
