I’ve always believed in doing rather than showing, and I never really like being technical - throwing around buzzwords may make you seem smart but what good is being able to explain “Return on Relationship” when you cannot deliver results?

In community management, you simply cannot get close to your community when you position yourself above them. The magic happens when you’re on the ground with your audience and getting your hands dirty. And when you are -there- whatever engagement metrics or sentiment score need not be measured by analytics. You just know.

I like the little to-and-fros with our fans and I love all the enthusiastic, if not sometimes heated discussions over games. When people care and identify, they defend and bash with a passion. Nobody talks about nobody, and that’s how we know we’re getting that “Return on Relationship” when we have a community.

Also, I avoid buzzwords simply because as gamers we’re all better at the trash-talk - I’m really better at telling you how you should optimize your gear for better DPS in Diablo 3, than explaining engagement rates on our Social Media channels.

Imagine my surprise when I’m asked to present a Keynote on the work we do over at Community.

With thanks to the opportunities available at Razer, I’ll be talking at Social Media Week Jakarta (at Senayan City, Jakarta) on February 25 about building a community brand.

If you’re heading to the event, do drop me a note!
