Rays' Starter Tyler Glasnow Suffers Oblique Injury

Oh, here we go again. Tyler Glasnow is injured, what a surprise. Can this man catch a break to be able to catch a baseball? So far, no.?

According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Rays starter injured his oblique during a live bullpen session Monday, February 27th at Disney. An MRI is scheduled for the next day to determine the severity of the injury the right-hander sustained.?

This comes after Tyler being sidelined from most of 2022 and the latter half of 2021 following Tommy John Surgery in June of 2021.

When will Tyler Glasnow pitch again??

Most oblique injuries last around 6-8 weeks on average. The MRI soon to come will determine the likely length of his absence.?

Who will start in place of Tyler Glasnow?

There will be a void at the start of the season, likely April for an otherwise extra arm to step up while Glasnow is hurt. Whether the Rays decide to go veteran oriented with Yonny Chirinos or young with Luis Patino we don’t know just yet.

When will we know how the Rays will progress without Tyler?

With there being a spring training game vs the Yankees, at Disney today, I’m sure Rays’ manager Kevin Cash will say a few words about Tyler’s unfortunate injury and the path forward.?

Does this mean anything for Tyler Glasnow’s future with the Rays?

Obviously the Rays can’t afford to pay him tens of millions of dollars to just be sidelined most of every season, so it comes into question: it’s not about if Tampa Bay will trade Tyler Glasnow, it’s now about when. Look towards next off-season right before the 6’8’ Glasnow is set to make 20 million in 2024 as when the Rays trade him.?

My Two Cents:

This is one of those injuries that you knew it would be coming soon, with the warm weather and Glasnow’s ever concerning fragility, but still have the same frustrating reaction towards. Tyler was the face of the Rays for 2020 and the start of 2021 and to see this happening quite frequently, it may be time to investigate the training staff's methods of pitcher’s work.?
