When Less is More, and why it’s exciting for Gen Z
The advent of the pocket computer is one of the more intriguing developments in the history of computing. As mobile devices proliferate, these miniature computers like the Raspberry Pi and Remix Mini are game changers. 2015 marks an age where more people, no matter what country you are born into can not only afford a mobile device but a computer for as low as $20.
This means Gen Z can learn coding and linux as they do basic arithmetic in grade school, and that’s what the future demands. Point and click GUIs don’t do us any favors, it’s entirely possible the baby boomers required that kind of interface but the young minds of the future sure as heck don't.
But technology is supposed to make us smarter, not simply make our lives so easy, still, most of us don’t even know how to “cd dir”. The information age likely requires software innovation, cloud syncing of all of our devices, apps wizardry, API understanding and not just pressing pretty buttons on our tablet, phones and Windows 10 desktops. It’s nice to see that kids these days know how to swipe and text, but for goodness sake put your children on Linux from young and help them internalize the basics of coding as they learn languages.
The mini computer is transforming the place of technology in education and computer education & literacy. If the next gen of Americans & Europeans are to compete with technology savvy Indians and hard working Koreans, Chinese and Japanese on the global stage, this has to happen.
A Raspberry Pi with 128 MB of RAM, one USB port and Ethernet connection, will cost you just $35. That’s starting to be affordable almost for developing countries. If we care about equality as a fundamental human right, this is big news. I want to live in a world where South African children say ‘Ubuntu’ with pride, where villagers in India know what Debian is and where a poor Mexican kid actually wants to toy with Arch Linux. It has the power to transform lives.
We still live with the remnants of former times, 6 years ago back in 2009, the average person watched 3 hours and 45 minutes of TV a day. That time being couch potatoes isn’t exactly contributing to the next gen of innovators, start-ups and information age citizens. For the Virtuals and Millennials, TV is an outdated tech and a traditional subscription is out of the question. DIY videos on youtube enable any device to be accessible to anyone that can afford to buy it. We need to boost our digital IQ and practice life-long education. Millennials have internalized this, and Virtuals will be even more driven. Click on next image for product video:
So when the Remix Mini appears on the scene, a smooth looking showcase product of Beijing based startup Jide Tech. You have to get excited!
This is computing for the environmental age, reducing all the usual waste. It uses just 10 watts of power compared to the 60-250 watts used by most computers, all in the palm of your hand. It will cost you up to $50, but this is for 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of space.
This comes with Ethernet, Bluetooth and USB connections, supporting wifi as well. It will be Android app compatible but be a hybrid device. The benefits of an android PC are pretty clear. In an age of kickstarters these folk sought to raise $50k and have 1252k so far. The world is watching.
The Remix Mini is powered by 64-bit chipsets. The Remix OS enables you to have access to the 1.5+ million apps of Android. The idea for the Remix OS was born in October 2013, so this creation is only getting on 3 years old.
Impressed yet? I am.
