Rare Supercars Among £100m+ Sold in First Half of 2024

Rare Supercars Among £100m+ Sold in First Half of 2024

In the first six months of 2024, Collecting Cars secured more than £100 million in sales for vendors worldwide, including a handful of particular rare supercars with seven-figure prices. The high-value cars leading the impressive sales total underscored the platform’s truly global reach, with the listings coming from the UK, continental Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

The highest sale price achieved in the first half of 2024 was a winning bid of $1,825,000 for the 2022 Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 sold in Dubai. One of just 40 such track-only cars delivered worldwide, it was offered in as-new condition and with Squadra Corse racing access.

In February, Collecting Cars curated a selection of auctions reflecting the tradition and colours most associated with Lunar New Year. Among these was the 2012 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport ‘Wei Long’; a unique creation built to celebrate the previous Year of the Dragon, featuring a raft of finely crafted porcelain details by K?nigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur of Berlin. It attracted bids from around the globe and sold for €1,610,000.

From Southeast Asia came a true performance icon in the form of a 1989 Ferrari F40. While all F40s left the factory in Rosso Corsa, this car had been repainted black and put through a programme of modifications that included an adjustable boost controller, adjustable JRZ suspension, an aluminium radiator, magnesium alloy Speedline wheels, and competition rear wing. It represented a great opportunity to acquire a usable example of the legendary supercar, or to put through a total restoration back to factory specification, and sold with a winning bid of $1,502,000.

Sold on Collecting Cars in June, and inspired by the icons of the owner’s formative years, The Silver Bullets & Red Arrows Collection was a carefully curated assembly of landmark performance cars, spanning five decades. The star was undoubtedly the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’. Considered by many to be the world’s first supercar, this particular Gullwing also benefited from a comprehensive restoration at a cost of more than CHF 260,000. Enjoyed as intended by the seller, and proving to be remarkably reliable, it secured strong interest from bidders worldwide and sold for £1,105,000.

Rounding out the top five highest-value cars sold in the first half of 2024 is the 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder, offered by a seller in Austria. While it had been shipped to the EU from Kuwait, it remained registered in the Middle East. Benefiting from a full service by Porsche Centre Salzburg in August 2023, and with the odometer showing a modest 7,776 km from new, this landmark hybrid supercar found a winning bid of €1,100,500.

While these were some of the highlights, among the total achieved in the first six months of the year were more than 230 Porsches with a combined value in excess of £18.5 million, no fewer than 47 Aston Martins, £8 million worth of sought-after BMW and Mercedes vehicles, more than 90 Ferraris, and 16 Lamborghinis. The platform also found homes for more than £3.5 million worth of sought-after and collectible number plates in the UK and Australia.

The high-value sales have continued into the second half of 2024, with the Collecting Cars team selling another Porsche 918 Spyder (€1,650,000), an iconic Porsche 956 race car ($890,500), and an off-market Porsche Carrera GT.
