Rare Soft Coral Garden Found off Newfoundland
This past summer, Marine Institute researchers found a soft coral garden while sailing past the Funk Island Deep.
A coral garden is a relatively dense collection of one or more coral species. This particular coral garden is unique as it is densely packed and complex, including marine life such as anemones, sponges, basket stars, and many soft corals. Spanning an estimated 10,000 square metres, the coral garden is just underneath the ocean's surface.
This discovery was found while conducting research for a 5 year project to monitor species and gather habitat information in marine refuges off Newfoundland and Labrador.
