#RAPKnowledgeLive Session 10: Leveraging Technology and Youth Power for Safer Roads

Join us for our #RAPKnowledgeLive session 10 –?Leveraging Technology and Youth Power for Safer Roads

In this session, we will discuss:

  • the AI&Me framework in the “AI&Me: Empowering Youth for Safer Roads” project and it’s success;
  • how the upgraded Youth Engagement App continues to empower young road safety advocates;
  • and introduce the Vietnam Safe School Zone Guide for safer school environments.

The AI&Me: Empowering Youth for Safer Roads” is a three-year project launched in Vietnam through a collaboration between AIP Foundation, iRAP, and Anditi, with funding from Fondation Botnar and co-funding from FIA Foundation. This project integrates three key technological initiatives: Big Data Screening, Youth Engagement App (YEA) and Star Rating for Schools (SR4S).

Together, these technologies help governments target life-saving road upgrades and speed management in areas where young people have identified the greatest need.

The project was piloted from March 2021 to March 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City, Gia Lai Province, and Yen Bai Province, Vietnam.

Over three years, the project has achieved the following:

  • Reached 9,397,309 beneficiaries.
  • Prioritized 106 schools out of 1,063 across the three cities using Big Data Screening.
  • Collected 19,160 YEA pins reported by 1,805 students from 18 schools.
  • Upgraded 7 schools with donor funding and 13 schools with local government funding, based on SR4S assessment data from 106 schools, 98 of which were rated 1-2 stars.

In parallel, AIP Foundation has developed the Vietnam Safe School Zones Guide in collaboration with the?University of Transport and Communications (UTC), the?Ministry of Transportation (MOT) of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the?FIA Foundation to support stakeholders involved in school zone-related projects. Whether it’s the construction of new schools, modifications to existing ones, road constructions or upgrades near school zones, or safety assessments pertaining to school investments, new constructions, and renovation projects, this guide serves as a valuable resource. While the design standards within the guide adhere to Vietnam’s regulations, its definitions, overarching planning and design principles, and essential traffic infrastructure for school zones can offer valuable insights to road engineers, policymakers, and entities in pertinent sectors worldwide.

Speakers will include:

  • Trang Truong (Senior Programme Manager (Vietnam) – AIP Foundation )
  • Hong Bui (Senior Programme Manager (Vietnam) – AIP Foundation )
  • Molly Stoneman (Director of Projects & Partnerships – YOURS )
  • Shanna Lucchesi (Project Coordinator – iRAP )
  • Minh Vo (Star Rating for Schools Coordinator – iRAP )
