Ransomware on the rise; Businesses divesting from Russia; Is the five-day workweek on its way out?; Miami's hiring rates are rising

Welcome to?"Ryan is Curious" Headlines,?your biweekly roundup of conversations that piqued my interest across all topics and industries. Let's jump right into it:

Ransomware on the rise

How prepared do you believe your company is in the event of a cyberattack?

I was on?CNN?Newsroom Live with?Rosemary Church this past week, breaking down the latest on Russia-Ukraine tensions, global financial market reactions, and the potential economic fallout from sanctions on specific industries and economies.

Near the end of the segment, I discussed cyberattack warnings issued by the US administration and how some businesses are unprepared to deal with them. Furthermore, if targeted at specific industries and/or supply chains, it can have a domino effect. The evolution of attacks is no longer solely based on physical force.

Following the broadcast, Ukraine declared a state of emergency and asked its three million citizens living in Russia to leave. According to Reuters, "Ukraine says another sweeping cyberattack is underway as state websites and banks are targeted."

I have a feeling we will be talking more about the situation in the future. Stay tuned.

Businesses Divesting from Russia

A growing number of businesses are making faster decisions and taking positions than ever before.

I was on?CNN?Newsroom with John Vause, breaking down the latest economic sanctions, including barring Russian banks from using the SWIFT international payment system, the impact on both Russian and Ukrainian citizens, and why certain businesses were divesting their ties with Russia. Listed below are a few of the companies making headlines.

bp, the British oil giant, announced a $25 billion write-off of its nearly 20% stake in Rosneft, the Russian energy firm.

TSMC?(the world's largest chipmaker) stated it will stop selling to Russia to comply with US sanctions.

Norway's $1.3 trillion sovereign wealth fund (Norges Bank Investment Management), the world's largest, will divest nearly $3 billion of its Russian assets (according to Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere)

FIFA?and?UEFA?announced that Russian clubs and national teams would be barred from participating in international soccer competitions.

Shell,?Volvo Group,?Mercedes-Benz USA,?UPS, and?FedEx?to name a few, are also halting some, if not all, of their partnerships/operations in Russia. Apple?has paused all product sales in Russia too. Here is the growing/updated list here.

Do you believe that a five-day workweek is ideal?

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below on what your workplace is currently implementing and/or what changes you anticipate taking place. Full Post ----> Here

In recent news, Belgium has just joined the growing number of countries that have adopted a four-day workweek.

"Belgian employees won the right to perform a full workweek in four days instead of the usual five without loss of salary, part of an agreement that aims to make Belgium’s notoriously rigid labor market more flexible." (Bloomberg)

Do you believe more countries will follow suit, or do you believe it is a passing fad?

Miami's hiring rates are rising

LinkedIn's March 2022 Workforce Report was just released and below are a few highlights that stood out to me:

- Hiring in the U.S. was 5.6% lower in February 2022 compared to last month January 2022

- National hiring was 9.8% higher in February 2022 compared to last year February 2021

-The industries with the most noticeable month-to-month hiring shifts in February 2022 were Recreation & Travel (2.5% higher), Corporate Services (2.3% higher), and Nonprofit (2.3% higher) (0.5% higher)

-The industries with the strongest hiring rates relative to pre-COVID levels were Recreation & Travel (39.6% higher), Software & IT (25.9% higher), and Corporate Services (14.3% higher).

The metro areas experiencing the strongest hiring rates relative to pre-COVID levels were Miami (16.30% higher), Austin (13.75% higher), and Dallas (10.91% higher).

What catches your attention?

For me, seeing all of the work that?City of Miami?has done to establish itself as a business/tech hub, the numbers seem to back it up.

For me, I sometimes just look at my socks right before I go on stage, as shown in this photo....it reminds me to smile and be myself! ??????????

?? - Just before I delivered my keynote address at the Annual USTOA Conference on the future of the travel industry, global tourism, and the importance of social responsibility. And, yes, it appears that my socks matched the carpet in the Manchester Grand Hyatt Ballroom in San Diego.

Cyberattacks/ransomware…my company is well-protected by my MSSP (Managed Services Security Provider). I used to work there and now own my own business with that company protecting my devices and data. They do not give options as to whether or not the business network/user devices run the security software/SPAM filters for email and other security ptotocols regarding PW management are in place. When you sign on as a client, you must agree to those terms, or you are not a client. In this day and age, there are too many risks, the hackers have become too sophisticated, and the price too great to allow an extra few dollars a month for the extra security features be the reason your business gets hacked and lose money, data, or worse yet…goes out of business b/c the data lost was sold and a customer sues you for everything you have. I’m not willing to take that risk. Are you? For an additional $20-50/user(depends on your environment, location and needs) a savvy MSSP should be able to protect your business.

Wow!! I’m fan girling right now, can’t believe I got mentioned as a part of your newsletter. Truly honored Ryan Patel. The headline that drew me in the most was around the compressed work week plus the 2nd and 3rd topics you’re speaking on at Innovation Work Global Week. The return to the office ‘to suit all’ is hot and there’s a lot of opportunities here and a lot riding on getting it right. And the topic of flexibility for roles that can’t be performed remotely really interests me. Why? Because learning how we are creating a #futureofwork that allows all roles some freedom and flexibility can only spark deeper and richer thinking and ideation for how to truly redesign for knowledge workers. And PS, I registered for a complimentary pass earlier this week and didn’t get any confirmation back. I’d love to tune in ??

I've watched how the ruble is dropping, and it's startling. There's no incentive to do business over there right now.
