In Response to a post on leadership and accessing talents and the "Range of Talent" (My words)...
In hypnosis and NLP, we teach about "range" of skills and abilities - whether that be hypnotic phenomena we can do or thinking-preferences that we can do and much more.
There exists a range for instance on the thinking features (preferences) - "internal vs. external" (sorting style).
For a leader that is acting from high internal he or she may miss a lot by not being external enough (sensory acuity is affected) to read and pick up on the signals or cues or communications or feedback that could be helpful.
Another is self vs other. If a leader sorts more by self they may discount the value of other's input or talent or attempt to "go it alone" and not access the talent or information/knowledge others have (not so much a team player but more of an independent one). Or if they do not sort by "self" enough then they may not lead with their gut intuition, talents or skills or what they know is the right thing to do (decision/choice).
Range (of thinking in various styles/meta-programs) can be extended or flexed and then learning occurs for the person. Using both ends of the continuum or range (and what is in between) is not a bad thing - it is a good thing - it depends on what is required in the moment or situation. Being able to extend your range is also completely possible as well. Although some would say it is somewhat "hard-wired' (patterns of responses).
An example of Hypnotic phenomena would be "association or disassociation" (or amnesia/hypermnesia). A person can disassociate from their resources or forget about their pleasurable times or successes and this can create a real issue or limitiation. Or they can associate to those they have or others may have, remember or recall them and access those talents and use them in the situation to make things word better. This could be as simple as not accessing an empowering belief or state. Get the gist!?!
