Random Rebel Thoughts for Today

My golf partner and I joke all the time about our short attention spans when we play our nine holes every other Tuesday. Luckily, we are in a “for fun” league and scores are not based on actual shots hit. Do they have a handicap of 36?
Some people are easily distracted. I definitely have those moments! Ok, days. Which is not a bad thing! To back up this statement, I found an article from a few years ago that lists 9 Unexpected Advantages of a Short Attention Span. WAIT!! Stay with me… read that article after you finish mine. (You wanted to click on the link, didn’t you?)
With short attention spans in mind; today I am giving you my “squirrel” moments and random thought regarding marketing, and any other topic that pops in my head:
- Brainstorming sessions should feel like everyone in the room is chasing different shiny objects. One idea may spark another idea and another and so on until you come up with something that feels right.
- Which brings me to your gut. Marketing should “feel” right when you create it. It is not always about analytics and the science behind artwork or letter placement. Create your marketing with your head and your heart.
- Stop taking your marketing so seriously that every word you put out there is analyzed to the Nth degree. Not every campaign is going to be gold. Be ok with that.
- Be a little edgy. Complacency disturbing content makes your audience pause vs. pass you by. Know where the proverbial line is in your content and put your toe on it, don’t cross it.
- Yes, color matters. Read more about it from HubSpot. WAIT, don’t click yet… I'm not done.
- Humor goes a long way. If you know me, you may say I have a sarcastic sense of humor. Some say that sarcasm is the lowest form of humor. I say those people just don’t get my jokes.
- Try something that you have NEVER tried before. Such as: attend an event that may seem like your target audience will not be there, maybe you just haven’t tried a different audience.
- Networking 101: Just because you may not be able to sell to the person you are talking to; they know someone who does need your product/service. Make sure they know how to get ahold of you once they uncover that need.
- Networking 102: Don’t sell. Inform. Tell stories about how you help people, they will remember the story before they will remember your elevator pitch.
- Networking 103: Talk to at least 2 people you have never met before.
- Your salespeople know far more about your clients than marketing analytics will tell you. ASK THEM what they think before you spent a ton of cash on a campaign. You won’t regret it.
- Just start writing. You don’t have to have a journalism degree to put your thoughts in an article for others to read. Want proof? You’re reading it.
If only one of these random thoughts helped you, I did my job.
