Random Digressions...

Sometimes my mind works in sound bytes rather than the creation of a story that leads to a point. As I begin to scribe this missive, allow me to go “sound byte” mode on you fueled by five things I’ve been thinking about lately….

  • Curiosity > Judgmental. It’s easy to judge the life of someone else. It takes discipline to be curious. It takes discipline to be compassionate and kind. It takes discipline not to respond. And, importantly, curiosity shows respect. You might not agree, but curiosity allows everyone to be open to new ideas.
  • Questions > Telling. It’s easy to jump into “fixing” mode. I’ve been guilty of it. The problem is that we may be trying to fix something that the other person doesn’t think is broken (and may not be). The more questions we ask, the more we can learn how to help or even if it’s wanted.
  • Read Before You Hit SEND. Remember that the Internet is forever, especially social media. You may have to defend what is written at some point in the future, so be sure. By the way, this includes those itty bitty things like what you support with your “likes, loves, and laughs.”
  • Unsolicited advice is usually about the person giving it, not the recipient. There are people in my life who have been granted unsolicited advice status. They know who they are. You probably have the same. Be wary of those giving you advice that are outside that circle because it’s probably meant in their best interest, not yours.
  • “Are you okay” might be the simplest form of caring we can give. When it’s genuinely asked with concern and care, you’ll almost always find out the truth. Relationships matter beyond family, friends, colleagues, and coworkers. The person being asked might just need to know someone cares.

Important note on the last one: If they aren’t okay, you may not be asked to “fix” anything or offer advice. You might just be that person who can be trusted as a friend.

Life is complicated and sometimes messy. Turns out, we all inhabit a sandbox that we call a planet together. Be intentional with whom you want in your life. Avoid and ignore the “haters” and embrace the people you want to work and play with.

It makes for a better sandbox.

Keep Chasing Unleashed.

Quote of the Week:

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”?

Oh wait ... I just liked this ... it's there forever! ?? On that point though - so true. I have a 2-part episode at the podcast that covers whether you are killing your online reputation (eps 23 and 24) and despite they are years old sadly the conduct hasn't changed. I saw a woman post about her new business in a community FB group recently trying to gain clients. She said she was 'qualified' in certain areas and a member asked her for her registration number because they couldn't find her. Her response killed any hope you'd use her for your business - especially when she called the questioner a "judgmental hater".
