Intellectual Property as a profession is attractive to those with a passion for the intersection between technical work, the creative arts and legal knowledge. We tend to be perfectionists, setting high expectations on ourselves and those we work with. This can make it all the more concerning when you run into a technical issue.

We've all been there before. You're in the middle of a presentation or a meeting and suddenly, your computer crashes. Maybe your Wi-Fi cuts out or your phone starts acting up. Whatever the technical issue may be, it's always frustrating—and it can often be difficult to overcome.

?LAST MONTH'S IP CHAT TECH FAIL

If you attended last month’s IP Chat, you know that we experienced a technical difficulty with our sound at the beginning of the event. There was a glitch in the LinkedIn audio at the very moment we attempted to go live with our chat! We had people waiting to attend our event, and LinkedIn was showing it as canceled! Normally, Hetal and I are cool, calm, and collected - but this caused panic. What do we do now? How do we contact everyone attending the event? Do we cancel it altogether?

After a few deep breaths, Hetal began reaching out to everyone on the contact list to let them know we were experiencing an issue and working to resolve it. Meanwhile, I set up a new event in place of the one that had glitched and canceled. The end result was a slightly shorter but incredibly productive conversation. With their guards slightly down, it seemed everyone was much more willing to contribute to the conversation - and the event was a success!?

?TURNING TECH FAILS INTO SUCCESSES

But just because technical issues can be a pain doesn't mean they have to ruin your day (or your productivity). With a few simple tips and tricks, you can learn to overcome any technical issue—no matter how big or small.?

1. Be prepared with a contingency plan.

?No matter how well you prepare, there will always be the potential for technical issues to arise. That's why it's important to have a contingency plan in place so that you know what to do in the event of a technical issue. This plan should outline who needs to be notified, what steps need to be taken to fix the problem, and how to communicate with customers or clients if necessary. Having a plan in place will help reduce the amount of chaos and confusion that can occur during a technical issue.

?2. Keep calm and carry on.

?It's easy to get frazzled when things go wrong, but it's important to remain calm and focused so that you can resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Losing your cool will only make the situation worse and make it more difficult to find a resolution. Take a deep breath and remember that every problem has a solution—it's just a matter of finding it.

3. Don't panic (or overreact).

?In addition to remaining calm yourself, it's also important not to panicked or overreact when communicating with others about the technical issue. This includes both internal and external stakeholders such as employees, customers, or clients. Getting too emotional will only serve to escalate the situation and make it more difficult to resolve the issue calmly and efficiently. Stick to the facts and provide updates as they become available.?

Technical difficulties are an inevitable part of doing business, but that doesn't mean they have to be disastrous. By being prepared with a contingency plan, keeping calm under pressure, and avoiding panic or overreaction, you can minimize the impact of technical issues on your business operations. next time something goes wrong, remember these tips and you'll be back up and running in no time!
