Mahwah, New Jersey –8/30/23 – Ramapo College(Teacher Education), the state’s premier public liberal arts college, today announced the launch of a new teacher education dual enrollment class for Hawthorne High School students. The course, ?“Introduction to Education,” will provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills they need to become professional educators.
“We are excited to offer this opportunity to our high school students,” said Dr. Adam D. Fried, Asst. Dean for Teacher Education. ?“By taking this course, these students can gain firsthand experience of the daily tasks of an educator. It's a chance for them to explore the teaching profession and make an informed decision about their future. This opportunity can be truly invaluable in helping them realize their potential and achieve their dreams.”
The “Introduction to Education” course will cover a variety of topics, including:
The history of education
Various types of teaching

Professional growth
Students who complete the year-long course will earn four college credits, which can then be applied to their teacher education degree. They will also receive a certificate of completion from Ramapo College. "The HHS Dual Enrollment partnership with Ramapo College enriches the learning experiences of our students and provides a pathway for aspiring educators to explore the education field earlier, while receiving comprehensive and practical training. Together, we hope to inspire students to become educators who will one day make a positive impact in our school communities and the education field as a whole." Stated Hawthorne HS Principal Kevin Pfister
Dr. Fried added, “we are optimistic that this initiative will make a significant impact on the ongoing teacher shortage in New Jersey. By exposing our high school students to the field of teacher education, and allowing them to earn college credits, we also hope to encourage our New Jersey residents to stay and teach in their home state. We can then ensure that our students receive the best education possible. It's important to invest in our educators at an early stage and provide them with the support they need to succeed. Together, we have the power to build a strong and thriving education system in New Jersey.
