44 years ago HLW’s managing Partner Ralph Thomas Walker,FAIA died. He left a lasting impression on the profession of architecture and equally as a prominent architect and partner of HLW. Walker is best known for his designs for the Barclay-Vesey Telephone Building (1922–26) and the Irving Trust Building (1928–31). Walker was called "The only other honest architect in America" by Frank Lloyd Wright, and "Architect of the Century" by The New York Times when he received the Centennial Medal of Honor from the American Institute of Architects. Walker served as the National president of the AIA in 1949 as well as the first Chancellor of the College of Fellows in 1952 responsible for both designing the medal of Fellowship but also in establishing the College of Fellows.
He attended MIT as well as was a Rotch Traveling Scholar in 1916.
Skyscraper design was to be the focus of Walker's career, and he was to be influential in determining what they would should look like. The skyscraper is the only means of living in this age of machine. It is an expression and reflection of the age.
Here is a photo of Walker with the somewhat unknown architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Some considered Walker the most well known unknown architect of his time.

7 年Great article David! Ralph Walker was responsible for so many beautiful buildings in NYC and around the country. The amazing brick details on the many telephone company buildings are his signature and easy to spot. Let's not forget the 1939 World's Fair either.
