A Rally Cry to End the HIV Epidemic for All, Not Some
Yesterday was National Black HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). This day is set aside each year to highlight the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black communities, to support Black people living with HIV in America, and to recognize the work that has been done to close this gap.
We have come far in the fight against HIV, but the fact remains we have not come far enough, particularly in Black communities. As my colleague Giffin Daughtridge, M.D. and I noted in an opinion piece that was published this weekend, “HIV-related stigma, social/structural influencers of health, and barriers to effective implementation of these medicines fuel unacceptable HIV-related health disparities for Black Americans.”
I invite you to read the op-ed, where we echo the calls for disruptive innovation and share our ideas to ensure efficacious tools are available for all, not some. You can find it in the Morning Call, Plus or Positively Aware.
Ending the HIV Epidemic requires partnerships between community, research, public health, pharma and the private sector to improve implementation of effective treatment and prevention. Working together, we can and will make change happen.
