Raising Our Democracy

Raising Our Democracy

America's democracy is a remarkable ideal, an unfinished promise and a daily practice. In each generation, we are called to embrace the work of building a more perfect union by facing our faults and harnessing our shared creativity to bridge our differences and solve problems together.

But civics is so much more than showing up and voting every four years. It’s participating in local town halls, it’s speaking up on important issues, it’s volunteering in your community, it’s voicing your concerns to your legislators, and it can be as simple as reading the news or as involved as running for office yourself.

There are many levels of civic engagement that are fundamental to our US democracy, and yet often people – especially young people – feel alienated from the very idea of civics.

Our clients at iCivics are hard at work trying to change that. To strengthen democracy and raise the next generation of engaged citizens, they are on a mission to teach young people how the system works, to value what it does, and to develop skills of critical thinking and problem solving.?

“We're never going to have a system where we all agree,” says Louise Dube , CEO of iCivics. “So you need to have those skills to be able to do that, to find ways to argue, to find evidence for what you're saying, to engage in conversation.” A firm believer in the American idea, and a Canadian immigrant whose mother was a trailblazing lawyer, Louise shares her perspective on what it means to teach democracy to the next generation in a new episode of our podcast .

As Louise puts it , our Constitution is “nothing more than a sheet of paper without the commitment of each successive generation to teach and learn it.”

At a time when the American experiment feels especially strained and the upcoming presidential election seems more daunting than inspiring, learning about iCivics' mission—from its founding by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to its ongoing growth and recent rebranding —can provide a much-needed dose of hope.?
