Raising Harley has been a profound journey of courage, resilience, and growth. It has taught me so much about love, advocacy, and perseverance. Along the way, I’ve learned valuable lessons that have shaped our family and strengthened our resolve. Here are seven key insights I’d like to share, each one a cornerstone of this journey:
1?? Embrace the Challenge: Acceptance is the First Step Toward Growth
Every parent has a vision of what their child’s life will look like, and when that vision shifts, it can be overwhelming. The first step to moving forward is acceptance—not as a surrender but as a commitment to face the challenges ahead. Embracing the journey allows you to focus on solutions, celebrate progress, and find joy in the present moment. When you approach challenges with courage and an open heart, you discover strength you didn’t know you had.
2?? Build Your Village: Community and Support Make All the Difference
No parent should navigate this journey alone. Whether it’s family, friends, neighbors, or support groups, surrounding yourself with a community of understanding and encouragement can make all the difference. These are the people who celebrate your child’s victories, comfort you on hard days, and remind you that you’re not alone. Your village may also include other parents who have walked similar paths, offering wisdom and solidarity. The right community can turn even the toughest days into manageable ones.
3?? Get Professional Guidance: Therapists and Counselors Can Be Life-Changing
The expertise of trained professionals has been instrumental in Harley’s progress and our family’s journey. Therapists, counselors, and specialists bring unique perspectives and strategies to help children thrive. They can also provide parents with tools to support their child’s growth at home. Don’t be afraid to seek out different opinions or change providers until you find a team that truly understands and supports your child. These professionals can often see potential and possibilities that might feel out of reach in the moment.
4?? Educate Yourself: Understanding Empowers Advocacy
As a parent, knowledge is your greatest asset. Take the time to learn about your child’s condition, therapies, and rights. When you’re informed, you’re better equipped to make decisions, advocate for resources, and push for the best outcomes. This could mean attending workshops, reading research, or connecting with organizations dedicated to your child’s needs. Every piece of information you gain adds to your ability to help your child navigate their world with confidence.

5?? Be Their Voice: Speak Up and Stand Strong
Your child needs an advocate—someone who understands their needs and isn’t afraid to stand up for them. This could mean ensuring they receive appropriate accommodations in school, asking tough questions during medical appointments, or fighting for services that others might overlook. Advocacy isn’t always easy, and it often requires persistence, but it’s one of the most impactful things you can do for your child. You are their champion, and your voice has the power to create meaningful change.
6?? Take Care of Yourself: You Matter Too—Prioritize Your Well-Being
Caring for a child with unique needs requires immense strength, but it’s impossible to give your best to them if you’re running on empty. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. Whether it’s finding time for a walk, enjoying a hobby, or even seeking support for your own mental health, taking care of yourself helps you show up fully for your child and your family. Remember, you are their foundation, and maintaining your own well-being is an essential part of the journey.
7?? Celebrate Progress: Every Small “Inchstone” is Worth Celebrating
Progress for a child like Harley might look different than the traditional milestones, but every step forward is monumental. These “inchstones,” whether it’s a new word, a moment of connection, or a physical accomplishment, represent the hard work and determination of your child and your family. Celebrate these victories, no matter how small they might seem, because they are reminders of resilience and love.
A Call to Action: Share the Journey
This journey isn’t easy, but it’s filled with moments that inspire, challenge, and transform. By sharing our stories and supporting one another, we create a community that understands the highs and lows of raising children with unique needs.
