Raising Colon Cancer Awareness: The Importance of Screening

Since it is March, it's crucial to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and the importance of screening and prevention. Due to missed colonoscopies and delayed care during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in the incidence of colon cancer. This has had a devastating impact not only on our client’s healthcare expenses, but also on families who have had to deal with the emotional toll of cancer diagnosis.

But why should we care? Because early detection and prevention can save lives. Don't let anxiety stop you from getting screened for colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy is a quick and easy procedure that can detect signs of cancer.

For those who may not have access to colonoscopy or are looking for a cost-effective option, the FIT test is a simple at-home screening tool our clients can provide their plan members. For just $5, employers can mail out the test and pay $58 if the test is returned through the VIP Network. If the results come back positive, a gastroenterologist will call the member and help you understand the next steps.

We understand the importance of staying healthy and taking preventative measures. If not the FIT test through the VIP Network, most health plans cover the branded test “Cologuard'. While it may seem expensive at nearly $700, it's still cheaper and less disruptive than a member experiencing colon cancer.

Don't wait for symptoms to appear before taking action. Make sure to get regular checkups and screenings to maintain your health. Catching colorectal cancer early is key to beating it. Let's work together to raise awareness and prevent this disease from taking more lives.

I’ve unfortunately seen so many critical illness claims get paid due to this devastating specific type of cancer.
