Raise the roof for energy efficiency

We’re raising the roof for energy efficiency with commercial rebates on dual fuel rooftop units (RTUs). These packaged units are the combination of an electric heat pump and gas-fired burner, that provide heating (electric with gas) and cooling (electric only). Dual fuel RTUs provide an option for commercial new construction and existing buildings to reduce energy consumption and overall greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining access to the reliability of the gas system. Customers can also help reduce overall emissions by designating all or part of their gas as Renewable Natural Gas.1

While we are firm believers in the benefits of installing dual fuel RTUs, you don’t need to take our word for it. Here are two early adopters of the technology on what install meant for their organizations:

  • "The [RTU] is the same size as the previous RTU, making the replacement easier,” said Suraj Baral, community energy specialist, Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. “Once the wiring and piping were ready, three hours in the morning was sufficient to replace the old RTUs. Additionally, the newly installed [RTUs were] operating within 24 hours after replacement."
  • Odessa Cohen, sustainability coordinator, municipal hall, District of Summerland, noted a host of benefits for their organization: “[The RTUs] reduced the amount of operations and maintenance labour hours [and is a] higher efficiency system.” Cohen also cited cost savings, improved air quality and improved office comfort thanks to the new units.

We’ve got rebates on these units to help support your organization with project and installation costs. Our energy solutions managers and technical advisors are ready to help for all our rebates for businesses.

[1] Renewable Natural Gas (also called RNG or biomethane) is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create RNG. When RNG is added to North America’s natural gas system, it mixes with conventional natural gas. This means we’re unable to direct RNG to a specific customer. But the more RNG is added to the gas system, the less conventional natural gas is needed, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels and overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Why keep the old-school natural gas/methane? Isn’t the goal electrification? Why only half an upgrade?

I've advised leaders in government, opposition, and the private and public sector. I believe solidarity should mean something, issues should be managed, and messages shared simply.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love the “Rebates” frogs.
