Raise the Ceiling: Embracing Generative AI in Experience Design

In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, Artificial Intelligence, specifically Generative AI, has left many of us in awe and nervous. From well-known tools like Midjourney to the subtler but equally impactful ones like Grammarly, it’s evident that the way we interact and achieve our goals is undergoing a profound transformation. The future is unfolding before our eyes, and with Generative AI upon us, it promises to reshape how we accomplish tasks and potentially disrupt traditional job roles. The extent of these changes remains uncertain and worrisome for many. With this in mind, I’m reminded of the quote by Jeff Bezos.

“Customers are always beautifully, wonderfully dissatisfied, even when they report being happy and business is great.” —Jeff Bezos

I found this quote inspiring and a bit calming. With the eventual paradigm shift, it’s paramount that Experience Designers elevate experiences to new heights, and discover new and more effective ways for customers to achieve their goals. Using User-centered Design methods, we can harness the power of Generative AI to foster invention, pioneer unimaginable experiences, and extend our collective vision. We possess unique superpowers in the world of design – our deep connection with the customer, our end-to-end line of sight, and our ability to pair emerging trends with customer needs. These strengths empower us to inspire, align, and empower teams to create exceptional experiences that meet the evolving needs of our customers. Our ability to unearth latent needs and address new challenges is constantly emerging. Customer needs are a dynamic landscape, and experiences, though valuable, are far from perfect.

Take, for example, the common task of ordering food. A decade ago, you’d curate a variety of menus and call the number to order your meal for delivery; it seems convenient enough, right? However, customers are never satisfied, and they chronically seek more effortless, more valuable, and more convenient experiences. Additionally, generational behavior varies; for example, telephone phobia is common with GenZ. Also, we’ve all struggled at one point to communicate our order over the phone to the restaurant. This leads us to today; gone are the menus, and nearly every restaurant, from “mom and pops” to mega – franchises, embrace order delivery apps to support their customers. For most, this experience was unimaginable and unnecessary. Though with new trends such as powerful smartphones, GPS, and broadband cellular networks, it’s seems obvious today.

Just as ordering food has evolved over the years, so will many other aspects of our lives. Generative AI will be pivotal in reimagining how jobs are accomplished, empowering us to deliver higher-quality experiences, and adapting to new challenges and conditions. We must build inventive narratives to inspire, align, and encourage others to dream bigger and connect to the next level.

Generative AI represents a remarkable leap forward in the world of experience design. It’s a tool that, when wielded wisely, can elevate our abilities, meet evolving customer needs, and transform the way we approach our work. As we raise the ceiling of what’s possible, we must do so with a deep commitment to curiosity, innovation, and, above all, a customer-centric mindset. The future of experience design is here, and it’s time to embrace it with open arms and open minds.

Jason ”Jay” Coudriet thank you for sharing. One area that we are talking about is where it makes sense to apply Generative AI and where we continue to lean into the creativity and fulfillment that design creates for our team. How do you balance efficiencies with a sense of purpose in your work?
