Rainforest re-establishment programme underway in Malaita

With Malaita’s reforestation boom, permanent nursery sites are reportedly being proposed for the substations in the province.

Mr. Ronnie Aiwewe in Auki has said forestry nursery site preparation is an important component of any reforestation programme.

He said he has officers stationed in the substations who are ready to help with the rollout of the proposal.

Mr. Aiwewe said this would provide easy access for farmers to collect trees for planting.

He said currently farmers are travelling to Auki at their own cost to collect nursed seedlings to take home and plant.

Mr. Aiwewe commented that the tree planting initiative started last year with the help of the MPG and it worked well for farmers, according to feedback from them.

The initiative is expected to boost reforestation in the province.

Mr. Aiwewe said his office has recorded growth in reforestation in the province and he thanked the people for taking up the initiative, but added his office would welcome government support towards the ultimate goal of re-forestation.

Comment.

A welcome initiative in conservation and forest re-establishment worthy of Provincial Government or Conservation affiliated Groups support.

Yours sincerely
