Rain and Shine, We Gave Our Time

(Reston, VA – September, 29th)  –SAHOURI Insurance played a small role in the large fight against hunger in Northern Virginia by volunteering with the Capital Area Food Bank.

It was a wet, chilly Saturday morning in Reston, Virginia. Hundreds of families formed a line reaching the end of the street; waiting, food-tickets in hand for their next meal.

The sight was hard to stomach. People just like you and me; some were young, too young, and others were old, just too old... to be waiting in line on a cold and wet morning. For the value of a full-course meal, these families can probably yield a feast to last them an entire week . 

We don't appreciate the little things. Like the freedom to purchase the bagels and fresh-squeezed orange juice my wife and I enjoyed after we finished volunteering. 

Nonetheless, I'm glad SAHOURI facilitated a day of giving back. Led by the Capital Area Food Bank, we helped reach 277 households with 10,700+ lbs of fresh produce.  

Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest organization in the Washington-Metro area working towards solving hunger, chronic malnutrition, heart disease and obesity. 

Many of us are baffled when we realize how many people in Fairfax County (one of the wealthiest counties in America) are food-dependent. Little did you know that 12.7% of Virginia's population suffers from food-insecurity. That's more than 1 million people in Virginia and 76,000 in Fairfax alone.

If we all play a small part, we can accomplish a huge goal. The Food Bank makes helping easy and accessible. From the variety of volunteer programs to the convenient shuttle services, all you have to do is just lend a hand.  

This week, the Food Bank got some well-deserved attention. The Washington Post's David Hagedorn published a column this week, about the Food Bank's Fill the Bowl Campaign.
