British Minister Visits Benguela-Ep Railway

A delegation led by the British Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, visited the Benguela Railway (CFB-EP), resulting in a train journey from Cubal Municipality in Benguela Province to Negr?o Station in Catumbela Municipality. The visit reflects the UK’s interest in collaborating with Angola on the Lobito Corridor.

The British delegation was welcomed by the Vice Governor for Technical and Infrastructure Services, Adilson Gon?alves, representing Governor Luis Nunes, along with members of the CFB-EP and LAR-SA boards.


Ethio-Djibouti Railway Engages in Strategic Talks to Address Operational and Maintenance Challenges

The Ethio-Djibouti Railway recently held discussions addressing the operational and maintenance challenges facing the railway. Mr. Chen Hai, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ethiopia, participated in the meeting to help tackle these pressing issues and enhance the railway’s efficiency. As a key trade route supporting Ethiopia’s economic growth, the railway’s current situation is concerning, with only 15 out of 32 freight locomotives operational. This has significantly reduced annual capacity to 2.4 million tons instead of the targeted 6.3 million tons. Resolving these challenges is essential to unlocking the railway’s full potential and boosting Ethiopia’s economic development.


Caminho de Ferro de Benguela Takes Swift Action to Address Rail Service Disruptions with New Equipment from South Africa

Caminho de Ferro de Benguela (CFB) is taking urgent steps to address equipment failures and meet passenger rail demand. In a statement issued on 10 August, the company announced the implementation of contingency plans for the timely repair and replacement of rolling stock, with new equipment being sourced from South Africa. The company aims to restore services to standard levels between October and November 2024.

On 13 August, Moxico Governor Dr Ernesto Muangala met with CFB’s CEO, Eng. Pedro Cabral, to explore solutions. Additionally, discussions included refurbishing rolling stock and planning for new urban trains and noted that the studies for the first phase of the Chicala-Luau line is underway.


Kano-Maradi Railway Project in Nigeria

In a project update from the African Development Bank , it was noted that Environmental Resources Management (ERM) and EnvAccord Limited were appointed by Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and its lenders to undertake an independent Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) assessment (‘the Assessment’) of a proposed dual-gauge passenger and freight railway line from Kano to Maradi. The railway spans approximately 284 km and is intended to improve transportation infrastructure between Nigeria and Niger.

The Ethiopian Railway Corporation’s fiscal plans were reviewed by the Public Enterprises Holdings and Administration Agency (PEHAA) on 14 August 2024. The review highlighted key achievements, including the corporation’s successful operation of its business units, securing permissions in the construction sector, and enhancing internal human resources. Additionally, the corporation generated 79.8 million Birr in revenue and saved 6.6 million Birr through cost-efficient strategies.
