The Arab Africa Trade Bridges Program (AATB) General Secretariat is pleased to announce the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire as a new member of the program. The Ethio-Djibouti Railway Share Company received the symbolic “key” from the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) on 10 May 2024. The Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, constructed by 中国铁建股份有限公司 and CCECC, commenced operations in 2018 following its completion. Over the last six years, the 752km Ethio-Djibouti operations have been led by the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.


Kenya, Uganda Standard? Gauge Railway

During a meeting held on May 16, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, Presidents William Ruto of Kenya and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda signed a tripartite agreement to enhance trade and infrastructure ties between the two countries. The recent agreements between Kenya and Uganda underscore their commitment to strengthening trade and infrastructure ties, with a significant focus on railway development.

President William Ruto highlighted the importance of extending the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Malaba, and further to Kampala and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This extension is seen as a vital step towards creating efficient and sustainable infrastructure for goods transportation across the region. Both presidents have instructed their ministers to urgently mobilise resources for the implementation of this shared regional infrastructure, emphasising the project’s potential to facilitate trade and regional integration within the East African Community.


TAZARA highlighted at? China-Zambia Development Cooperation Conference

This week, a TAZARA Revitalisation Forum took place on the sidelines of the China-Zambia Development Cooperation Conference. The Zambian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Hon. Museba Frank Tayali, MP, underscored the importance of the ongoing partnership between China and Zambia in revitalizing the historic Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority TAZARA railway. In his speech, he highlighted several key points: TAZARA stands as a symbol of friendship and cooperation between China, Zambia, and Tanzania. The partnership aims to foster economic development and regional connectivity through railway transportation. Reviving TAZARA is crucial for enhancing trade linkages and catalysing economic growth in sectors like agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. This revitalization aligns with the objectives of the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting connectivity and economic integration. An efficient railway system will reduce road congestion, lower the carbon footprint, and promote a healthier environment. The Minister also provided an update on the ongoing negotiations to concession TAZARA, which are progressing well. The target is to sign the Concession Agreement by September.
