Rail Week 2025: A Glimpse into the Soul of the Rail Industry

There’s something about railways. They’re not just tracks and trains—they’re the arteries that keep this country moving, the pulse of progress, and a glimpse into the future. The vast network of steel and concrete that criss-crosses the UK isn’t just a mode of transport; it’s a reflection of who we are, and more importantly, who we could be.

Rail Week is not just a job fair or a set of dry presentations. It’s a revolution—an invitation to dive headfirst into the heart of the rail industry, an industry that, frankly, is desperate for the next generation of talent. And we’re doing everything in our power to make sure that the kids (and everyone) who walk away from Rail Week know one thing: the rail industry needs them, and the rail industry can’t wait to see what they bring to the table.

The rail sector is staring down a skills gap that’s as real as the tracks beneath our feet. And the young professionals in this industry, are determined to bridge that gap. Not just because we need more engineers, planners, and leaders, but because the rail industry is a beast that’s constantly evolving. It’s the future of mobility, sustainability, and innovation, all rolled into one. And if you think the only thing we do is move people from A to B, well, you haven’t seen anything yet!

Rail Week 2025, running from 10th to 16th February, is our chance at Young Rail Professionals to bring the rail industry to life for students, teachers, parents, and anyone with an ounce of curiosity about what goes on behind the scenes. But don’t think of it as a glorified sales pitch.

This is raw, this is real, and this is where the magic happens.

The volunteers within Young Rail Professionals delivering are across the regions, the national leads Michael Yat Kit Chung and Rony R. have been planning, editing and creating a plethora of events nationally. Under what was a herculean ask from me at the beginning of April24: Make it bigger and better than ever before.

Let’s set the scene. On Monday, 10th February, we kick things off with the Birmingham New Street Station Pop-up Stall. Trust me, it’s not your average “here’s a leaflet, now go away” experience. We’re bringing the heat, with a vibrant, interactive stall that gives you a real taste of what’s going on in the rail industry. The YRP West Midlands committee will be there to chat about everything from engineering to operations, offering up a candid look at how it all works, and how you can be a part of it.

Meanwhile, in Wales, the Rail Careers Fair is where things get serious. If you want to know where the rail industry is headed, this is where you should be. You’ll be able to meet employers from across the sector, all looking for fresh faces, fresh ideas, and fresh ambition. If you think you’ve got what it takes to make a difference in rail, this is where you need to plant your flag at the Centre for Student Life.

Tuesday, 11th February, brings some seriously cool opportunities. The DMU Depot Tour in Bristol is a behind-the-scenes look at the machines that keep everything rolling. These aren’t just trains; they’re complex systems built to carry thousands of people every day. It’s a high-stakes game, and it’s one that demands precision. If you’ve ever wondered how we keep our trains in top condition, this tour will give you the answers—and maybe spark a few questions of your own.

That same day, we’re diving deep into technology with Tech Talk Tuesday. UKTram and AtkinsRéalis are giving us a peek into the future of rail tech—think autonomous trains, AI-powered maintenance, and green energy solutions that could reshape how we travel. This is the future of rail, and it’s happening now. If you’re not paying attention, you’ll miss it.

By Wednesday, The Stoke Gifford Depot Tour is one of those rare chances to see the hidden world of rail maintenance. If you’ve ever stood on a platform and thought, "I wonder what happens behind those locked doors?", now’s your chance to find out. This is where we keep the trains in working order, ensuring that nothing is left to chance. It’s gritty, it’s intense, and it’s absolutely vital to the entire rail network.

Then there’s the Walkabout at the MTR Elizabeth line Old Oak Common Depot. If you’ve ever been on the Elizabeth Line and wondered about the behemoth that powers it, now’s your chance to see it up close. Old Oak Common is a key part of the network, and what happens there is nothing short of engineering brilliance.

And that’s just the start. To see what else we have in store: take a look at the young rail professionals website events section.

The Real Takeaway

Here’s the thing: Rail Week isn’t about slick presentations or corporate jargon. It’s about real people doing real work, and about young people seeing themselves in the future of this industry. The rail sector is massive—complex, varied, and in constant need of fresh energy. We’re talking about everything from high-speed trains to local networks, from cutting-edge tech to the hands-on work that keeps it all running smoothly.

But it’s also about something deeper. Rail Week is about breaking down the walls between us and the younger generation that will shape this industry. It’s about showing them the sheer scale of what’s possible and helping them carve their own path. And it’s about giving them the tools to succeed. This isn’t a gimmick; it’s a serious call to action.

We’re opening up the doors to the rail industry, pulling back the curtain, and inviting anyone with passion and ambition to take a step into the world we’ve built. From the depot tours to the tech talks, from the careers fairs to the seminars, Rail Week is a full-throttle ride into the heart of the rail industry. It’s where you come to discover, to question, and to decide if you’re ready to jump in.

If you’ve ever thought about a career in rail, or if you’ve been wondering what’s next after school or university, Rail Week 2025 is your chance. So, mark your calendars. This is the future. And it’s waiting for you.

See you there.
