Radiance and Magnetism in Leadership – very different, both needed

When we think of magnets, we think of the power they have to attract and repel – remember the classic iron filings experiment that we did in school as kids? When we think of magnetic leaders they have equally powerful energy – which, when harnessed well, can attract people to want to come closer, to be in the orbit of the leader and to follow where they lead. It can of course also repel for a variety of reasons. Often also referred to as charisma, this magnetism can move mountains in the day-to-day world as people find themselves lining up to be helpful and make miracles happen.
Radiance, on the other hand, isn’t so often considered in the context of leadership and yet is equally powerful with a long-lasting impact. By radiance I’m referring to the heart and soul qualities that literally shine from a person, qualities which are more subtle, often more ‘quietly spoken’ we might say, yet with no less power. If we consider the verb, to radiate we might imagine light shining, or warmth emanating. It has a more feminine quality than magnetism in that whilst often brilliant in quality, it is also understated from an ego perspective. It creates space within which the other can absorb the energy, be inspired and find their own power.

Why are both needed in leadership? I perceive magnetism to be active on what we might call the horizontal or practical level. It is about drive and purpose and direction – mobilising the physical aspects of life. Radiance on the other hand exudes a deeper knowing and wisdom coming more from a vertical or soul inspired space and helps to create the container within which action can take place in a more informed way.
If we are open to finding our centre point between horizontal personality inspired qualities and the vertical soul inspired qualities, we find ourselves in a ‘perfect’ place of ‘Self’ expression – combining directed action with soulful wisdom. Don’t we need more of that leadership in the world today?

2 个月Well said Lorraine. Both magnetism and radiance are needed. In my experience, people sense/feel radiance, but aren't usually able to name what they are sensing or feeling. They intuitively know it matters, but as it's not as talked about or lauded, they may miss the power and value of it.
