Racism at Work, How Binna Kandola changes the game.

How liberating it was last week to hear an articulate polymath talk about Race and Racism
Binna Kandola’s book launch resonates at multiple levels to a mixed audience satisfying critics, corporates and campaigners, something for everyone without deviation or drama.
In his new book “Racism at Work - the danger of indifference “hits a new mark explaining both the historical construction of Race based prejudice and how it has morphed into practices and bias that are apparent in too many UK workplaces.
Utilising a mixture of historical , cultural and psychological insights / data - he explains 5 game changing ideas in practical terms.
That racial discrimination did not exist before the Slave trade, prior to 1444, there was Little or any historical commentary on skin colour. People of course still were segregated but over geography , language or culture.

That racism is a cultural construct created to justify the Slave trade , creating the conditions for some humans to be seen as less than others to foster one of the worlds most profitable industries.

Then scientific proof of racial differences were constructed as an important justification that is still utilised today for creating the illusion of those differences between races.

That everyday micro incivilities are the new racism - a set of individual practices that remain prevalent because they are unchallenged and support an existing power structure.

That these actions and the stereotypes associated with them can be seen to affect some startling statistical realities particularly in regards to selection and recruitment.

There’s no way to encapsulate the breath of insight in the book in a short blog piece all I can say is the format and quality cannot do the books impact justice .

To do that you have to read the book , probably twice!

Bought this yesterday after someone from our EDI group talking about it. Nice bit of synchronicity :)
