Racing To The End Of 2019

Racing To The End Of 2019

I feel like I’m racing to the end of 2019 and when I reflect on everything that we have already done, I am really pleased by some of our achievements and really gratified with the work we have done with our clients and certainly with my personal clients.

There are times though, that I have had some frustrations and I know that there are so many things that I could be doing better.

So I am working hard right now to set myself up for 2020 to improve the things that need improvement, to elevate a lot of my activity and the way I show up in so many ways. So my question for you is…

How is 2020 going to be different for you, and what are you doing to make that happen?

I have a few ideas to help you get set up.

This is about getting organised before you go on your break for the holiday season to make sure when you get back to your work-space that you are ready to go and that you are focused on the right things.

The first: Is to make sure that you get your out of office email set up correctly.

Giving people really clear instructions about what to do with the email, not just that you are not around, but telling them when you are going to look at it, if you are not going to look at it and so on.

So you are setting those expectations.

As well as email, set up your voicemail to do exactly the same thing... Set the expectation by advising when will you be returning calls after the holidays and what they can do if they can’t reach you, then direct them to somewhere else, like to another team member, to another resource, or let them know a way they can make an enquiry.

The second: Is that you need to have a return to work plan.

Before you go on leave or if you are already on leave, this is something that you can do!

What I mean by that is actually book some time out immediately on your return to work to catch up. Physically book it into your calendar so that no one else can get in there;

- Set time aside so that you can catch up on your email.

- Set time aside to catch up on any key reading.

- Set time aside to organise your calendar, so you can be focused on the right things.

If you do all of that before you go on leave, then when you come back you have got a comfortable return to work, rather than a highly stressed or highly pressurised one.

The third: Is get really clear on your top 3 to 5 priorities at work.

By priorities, I mean high impact activity which makes a difference in your role and what you are supposed to be delivering.

Once you identify your top priorities, you need to make sure that every week you allocate time to progressing those top 3 or 5 priorities. So book it into your calendar!

The fourth: Is that you allocate planning time each week.

My suggestion is that before you close out each week in the new year, that you make a plan at the end of the week, (for me that is on a Friday afternoon for the following week), so I already know before I go into the weekend, exactly what I am going to be doing next week. That way you are never caught unaware and you have already set yourself up for success. So book it into your calendar!

The fifth: Is that when you do your planning, that you allow reactive time.

We are always going to have important things that come up that we need to respond to and we need to have time available in our calendars to be able to do that. So don’t book yourself solid with 7hrs, or 8hrs, or 10hrs of activity every day. Make sure that you have a couple of hours each day set aside to react to the really important things that are urgent.

So these are my 5 tips to set you up for success next year.

They certainly are the things that I will continue to do.
