How do we move beyond diversity and inclusion to anti-oppression, liberation and freedom?

Charmaine Roche , who describes herself as a Compassionate Disruptor and Social Justice Change Agent, ?joins AC podcast host Dr Alex Morgan to discuss what really needs to change in the world of coaching for it to take an anti-racist approach. Drawing on her research report ‘Racial Justice, Equity and Belonging in Coaching’ Charmaine digs deeper into the intention of change as well as its nature.

She discusses how the issue of race exemplifies many tensions and how structural and systemic racism is hard-boiled into our social, economic and political systems. Charmaine expresses how we need something more than different faces at the same table.

This discussion is part of our Diversity and Inclusion podcast series where we explored what a coaching profession that truly embraced Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) would look like.

"What if people do not like the table you are inviting them to sit at? Why not redesign the table, or remove the need for one, not just change the composition of the faces that sit around it?”

“At the heart of systemic coaching is the ability to create safe spaces, where difficult conversations can be had, hidden dynamics can be made visible and uncomfortable, complex truths can be acknowledged.”

In an article for our Coaching Perspectives magazine, Executive Coach Charmaine Roche , ?writes about her experience taking part in an innovative ecosystems supervision group six weeks after the killing of George Floyd. She chose not to be put in a box as “the black woman in the room”, but to liberate herself as an “exercise of power” in her relation to others. A short but powerful piece of writing.
