Rachel, Paleontology NOT Debt! Part I
Miss Rachel, just 18 years old, you give me & lots of Americans hope!
So, yes: become a paleontologists -but do NOT go into debt to do so!
Paleontologists clean, dust meticulously bones, bone fragments of dinosaurs et al -- and the good ones work really, really hard.
At 18 years old, you are literally cleaning buildings and working really hard at Lindenwood Conference Center in Donaldson/Plymouth, Indiana - and dreaming every day of dinosaurs...and how you'll work really hard to dust, clean, polish their bones and remains..
What's more romantic than that?
Mission Explorers at National Geographic Society Sylvia Earle and Jane Goodall would be so proud!
How does one find people to invest in your future paleontology career?
Read on...
Below are the 2 articles I wrote for young adults desiring to get their engineering degrees at the The Catholic University of America School of Engineering without taking out student loans.
Either: you pay for your education or you persuade others to pay for you, by showing your work ethic, delineated goals, academic track record etc...
What I wrote herein can be applied to any ambitious young American who wants an education, a career, or a great learning experience --- without the debt.
Americans are the most generous people in the world - there are American scholarships, grants, foundations and good American people, small businesses, neighbors, churches, mosques, temples, YMCA's, banks, credit unions across this country -- and probably right in your small town and Indiana region who will hear of your interest in paleontology and say, "Yes, I'll take that ride with Rachel - I'll invest in her and read about her progress in the years to come. She's a GREAT investment!"
HOW to PAY for YOUR ENGINEERING EDUCATION - OR, your Other Field of Education
How do you pay for your Engineering Education at The Catholic University of America, or anywhere??
Even if you did not obtain top notch high school grades (A+/A/A-), earn a great sports record, or foster keen, noble, honorable desire to serve your country as a military person – or you possess all 3 of these qualities: great grades, terrific sports acumen, and patriotic duty to serve the county - then the school, its sports program and/or the military will fund your education.
If not?
There are steadfastly many people & groups who will invest in you and your education.
However, you must research these people and groups, and the ask for the money.?
Any one person can get an organization, a group of people, or a person to invest in them
Before I became a full-time freelance writer (because I once worked at National Geographic Society, and Glenn Oeland and Chris Johns inspired me to do so), I was a teacher.
My last stint in Virginia was to teach ESL students, newly arrived from Central America, science who knew no or very little English – but whose right brain analytic skills per math, science, were very high.?
We decided to do a real plant and animal cell biology lab and wrote to SAFEWAY grocery stores for a grant to pay for the candy and food to make the cells.?
They got the grant, made the cells, took pictures of their lab results, and SAFEWAY management was so impressed, they offered my students jobs. ?True story.
You pay, your parents pay, or someone else pays your CUA tuition
Either you, your parents, or another person/group/organization you persuade can pay your tuition. ?
What’s that mean??
Other people/foundations/your community pay your tuition
You find foundations, sports teams, companies, social groups, a future employer, the military, a past high school employer, your community to INVEST IN YOU because you are a:
o??good academic worker
o??sure bet as a return for investment ?
o??terrific athlete, citizen, volunteer
o??honest person who has turned their life around
o??awesome kid of parents your community respects and admires
o??your coach’s favorite team player
o??your classmates most respected peer
o??good friend of the underdog, the bullied
o??amazing worker, colleague at your local community job
?
Community organizations, if you ask, will invest in you, IF you ask, for example:
·?????your middle and high school employer: Safeway, Giant, McDonald’s
·?????Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Knights of Malta
·?????Your church, mosque, temple
·?????Parents and/or family’s bank
领英推荐
·?????Local credit unions
·?????Local businesses who know you, your family, parents, cousins because you shopped there
·?????Your travel/local/school coaches and team sponsors
·?????Junior achievement
·?????Boy scouts/girl scouts/4-H
·?????YMCA/YWCA
·?????Boys and Girls clubs
·?????BLACK STEM
·?????NAACP
·?????National Rifle Association (NRA)?
·?????Ducks Unlimited
·?????Hunting, Fishing groups
·?????Knitting/Sewing/Carpentry Guilds – your/your parents’ hobby group
·?????Local automotive/car repair shop
·?????Farming/farmers/ranchers/dairy guild/consortium/cooperative
·?????Local grocery stores – my Fairfax County, VA ESL students who barely spoke English wrote a grant – with my help – to SAFEWAY grocery store to ask monies for their plant/animal cell biology lab and got the money. Then, they did the science, took pictures, sent them to Safeway, and SAFEWAY offered all of them jobs! True story. That really happened.?
How much money?
Any amount of money is a lot of money whether its $20.00, which can pay metro fare and part of a cell phone bill; or, $400.00 which can pay for a semester of books; or $5,000.00 which reduces overall tuition.??
There IS money out there for you
There’s a lid for every pot, so the saying goes.?That means each of us – whether introverted, extroverted, different, shy, brash, difficult, push-overish, prudish, soft-spoken, temperamental, short-tempered, foul-mouthed, friendly, likable, disagreeable – can find one person, group, or organization who respects you enough JUST AS YOU ARE to fund your education.?????
That’s true of YOU an engineering student as well:?There is ONE good American, group(s) of Americans, American investor, company, social group who wants to INVEST in YOUR EDUCATION with monies in the form of a stipend, grant, fellowship, paid internship.
That way, you and your parents can purchase a good engineering education WITHOUT GOING INTO DEBT and then have an amazing post-graduation income ?so that in 15 years you can form your own scholarship, grant program, and pay for someone just like you:
Here’s how:
·?????Research, research, research?
·?????Ask, ask, ask
·?????Apply, apply, apply
1.????search for monies/grants/stipends at the local library with your always helpful librarian
2.????write the essay, make the phone call, submit the paperwork, send the email they require
3.????follow up, follow up, follow up on your interest
I sent an inquiry about how to obtain monies for an engineering school – if one is a working class, low-income, or middle-class student – to 3 librarians: Library of Congress; Berryville, VA Clarke county library; and the St Joseph County.
Here are the resources Mark the librarian from the South Bend, Indiana St Joseph County Library sent.?He writes:
“I did a little searching online and found many websites that are pertinent to what you are seeking, i.e., scholarships for engineering schools. Also, you have a large variety of books and reference material on the subject, both physical books and eBooks. You can find these through the library website, or come in, and we can help you find the resource that works for you. Hope this helps.”?-Mark?A few of these are:
I sent out an email to the United States Library of Congress inquiring about monies for students wanting to attend an engineering school.?When I get their results, I’ll send a global email.?
