RAA recommends public transport review
You may have seen in The Advertiser today that RAA has made a suite of recommendations on how we can boost public transport use in our State.
These insights are of course informed by our members, of which there are now almost 800,000.
Our members drive, cycle, walk, run, scoot and catch public transport—and we’re proud to be a strong voice for all of them.
That’s why today, in particular, we welcomed the opportunity to discuss our recommendations at the Select Committee on Public and Active Transport, an inquiry into the availability and quality of public transport in South Australia.
Our members tell us existing processes for purchasing and validating tickets is a barrier to catching public transport. The rollout of tap and pay technology which allows commuters to pay with their credit card is encouraging. Buying a digital ticket, according to our members, would also help to alleviate this problem.?
We know there is demand for alternative transport options, particularly in our regions and outer suburbs. On-demand transport may be a solution to that.
All modes of transport need to be made safer and more attractive in South Australia.
Cycling is an affordable, healthy, and environmentally friendly way of getting around—and our members tell us improved cycling infrastructure would encourage greater participation in this form of active transport, which would benefit the community and road users through reduced traffic congestion.

This is why we’ve called for a state-wide cycling strategy with a $10 million annual infrastructure investment.
E-scooters are also growing in popularity as a sustainable alternative to driving and connecting people to public transport as part of their journey. We should be taking a more holistic approach to integrating these personal mobility devices as part of South Australia’s entire transport network.?
