Ra?kaj update is all about sign language interpreters, end consumer and AI

History

All updates to ScheduleInterpreter? platform are named after painters and follow alphabetical order from A to Z. In search for August 2019 update we were looking for an artist name starting with R and Slava Ra?kaj was first on the list. Slava Ra?kaj (pronounced Slava Rashkay) is considered to be the greatest Croatian watercolorist of the late 19th and early 20th century. She was also deaf since birth. It was remarkable coincident that an update to the platform, addressing intricacies of the sign language interpreters management can be named after a deaf artist.

Traditional values

Unlike spoken language, sign language culture of services is inclusive. Corporate clients, interpreters and end consumer all have their say. Smaller companies or agencies can provide white glove treatment, accommodating and tailoring to the needs of all parties. This approach creates evercomplex processes for vetting sign language interpreters, matching them to the requests for service, teaming, billing and other established procedures in sign language interpreter referral universe. Yet, it works perfectly well and forges incredible relationships that last for decades and often generations. It also results in an overwhelmingly complex business environment that may affect scalability.

Using tech to preserve the values

The task of bringing end consumer into the management process is not simple. It is an extra layer in the workflow and in the large scale operations, where several thousands of assignments are managed in a single month, tracking each individual becomes a task multiplied by tens or even hundreds of factors.

It all starts with the client's account or the facility where the interpretation takes place. Interpreters must clear all the requirements and be eligible to provide services at that specific location. A deaf or hard of hearing person, who needs the services of a sign language interpreter, has set of unique requirements too. Then, the interpreters who work for an individual, have their preferences as well.

In redesigning ScheduleInterpreter? to be the platform of choice for the sign language providers, we had to replicate human decision making process. To test the ideas, we built a model to emulate the operations of a small company, less than 1,000 assignments per month. The initial setup was complex and extremely time consuming. As production tools started to mature, we were able to teach AI to analyze historical data and built production-ready environment in a matter of seconds. The environment is fully automatic and preserves the quality of the human touch.

Ra?kaj update enables sign language service providers improve efficiency in operations. It simplifies complex tasks while helping to continuously improve the relationships so dear to everyone.

Can AI replace a human?

After Ra?kaj update, the built-in AI still works as an advisor, delivering set of ready to be used decisions that can be overruled or completely abandoned by a human. The final choice is still made by a human.
