R U OK Day... Every Day

R U OK Day... Every Day

I always have a few mixed emotions on RUOK Day and have swung around from strong advocate; to quiet observer; and back to somewhere in the middle.

The reality is that the day in principle represents exactly the right thing. It encourages and equips people to reach out and check on each other. To gently probe, and ultimately to provide support to the people in our lives who are not going OK. It is reminder that people aren't always as well as they seem, and that often a brave face might be masking underlying pain and suffering.

I have seen more than a few examples of where the simple question 'Are you ok?' is the opening gambit in unlocking and addressing hidden hurt. People whose lives have been saved by the power contained in that small question.

The counterpoint that I inevitably dwell on, is that the question should represent an ongoing approach, rather than an annual event. That it is not enough to make the effort once per year, but instead it should be a constant mindset.

I know that many people find this day very difficult, as being asked as a token gesture if they are ok, after being ignored previously, can be more damaging than helpful.

It's why I choose to quietly celebrate the intent of the day, while not diving in headlong. I use it as an opportunity to reflect on mental wellness, community and connection; and my absolute responsibility to care for the wellbeing of others every day of the year. To show appreciation for those who use the day to foster positive change, but also to support those who struggle with it.
