The behavioral health community is celebrating the 30th anniversary of National Recovery Month right now. The focus is… recovery (surprise!).
As the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) states, recovery focuses on enabling people to “live healthy and rewarding lives,” with Recovery Month “reminding us that treatment is effective and that people can and do recover.”
A key to recovery is that it not just about the illness and symptoms being gone, but rather having a life worth living. This is a significant reframe of how we approach health traditionally.
As I talked about during Mental Health Month, meaning in life and presence of disease are not opposites. But how we talk about progress with data often makes it seem so.
Thanks to Techwire for publishing my newest article, exploring how data can empower recovery… or unintentionally contribute to stigma and discrimination.
Let’s use #data4good to help stand for recovery and let people know that recovery happens!

5 年Thank you for this point of view Dr. Morgan, and for fighting the good fight. My sister was in recovery but her body and mental health lost their battle last week. If we can use data to treat the whole person, not just the addiction, we can help prevent such tragedies.?
