The current situation on the storage market can be summarised by strong competition and increasing flexibility requirements from fluctuating power and gas demand, decreasing gas price-volatility, as well as low spreads resulting in unpredictable and comparably low filling levels. There is a need to take care of these challenging market conditions at both national and European levels. Some experts suggest that the prospect of German gas storage facilities to provide flexibility will slowly improve, but other independent stakeholders estimate that storage capacity in Europe will return to the levels last seen a decade ago. In this article the authors describe their views on the current market situation and give an outlook on the role of gas storage operators in providing physical gas flexibility in the future low carbon energy system.

7 年The prospect for storage has always been good but near term reality shows a mismatch. As long as storage is owned and operated by integrated energy companies, a sudden improvement of storage spreads is highly unlikely
