(not quite) An MBA in a Day

(not quite) An MBA in a Day

Before joining Amazon Web Services (AWS), I had a long career in Consulting, and, before that, I spent time building at start-ups and scale-ups.

At AWS, I've spent 8+ years building and leading teams that invent for customers. I've written countless narratives to set strategy, and authored dozens of promotion documents to elevate people. I've also interviewed more than 650 people, and worked as a Bar Raiser to help other teams hire great candidates.

Through these experiences, I've noticed themes that limit the potential of technical professionals. So, I created classes, templates, and workflows to help my teams understand the business (theirs and their customers), set ambitious plans, engage stakeholders, measure impact, and use mechanisms to deliver results. I called this program (not quite) An MBA in a Day. Why? Well, because it's not quite an MBA, and it doesn't quite incorporate all the material you'd cover in an MBA at Harvard, or Wharton, or Queens. But, during the time we spend together, we'll cover key topics that will help you be a more potent operator, a more effective communicator. Those tools will help you drive change, and deliver results.

?? Program Overview

The program will be delivered on Tuesday nights from 7:00PM - 9:00PM in person.

Over the course of several sessions, we'll cover topics below. Together, we will learn and be curious, adapt as we need, and have a lot of fun growing together.

  • SESSION 1: Introduction to Business Strategy: What is a business, and how does it know what to do?
  • SESSION 2: Mental Models for Decision Making: Frameworks for thinking about problems, and systems for building solutions.
  • SESSION 3: Value Mapping: Turning strategy into practice, and delivering high-impact results that matter.
  • SESSION 4: Writing for Thinking, Writing for Business: Using clear writing as a way to drive clear thinking; strategies for effective communication.
  • SESSION 5: Mechanisms for Building and Scaling Businesses: What is a mechanism, and how can you use it for inventing, and operating a business.
  • SESSION 6: Goal Setting and Managing to Goals: How to think about goals for the business, and how to measure, track and report on goals.
  • SESSION 7: Hiring Techniques: Things to consider when building teams (with good advice on interviewing, too).

Along the way, we'll engage in a mixture of presentation, collaborative group discussion, and some light "homework". I'll also set up a way for all of us to share books, podcasts, and other assets that can help make the most of the time we spend together.

?? Anytime Feedback

You can leave feedback for me any time, on this form. I look forward to hearing what you like, what you wish was better, and topics you'd like to see covered.

?????? Online Events in the Future

As we refine the program, we'll be more ready to move it online to so we can learn together. I expect that to happen in 2025. If you follow this page, you'll be able to keep up to date with progress.
