Quit beating yourself up

Quit beating yourself up

We all mess up from time to time, whether we like it or not. It’s a part & parcel of “being human”.

But how much we beat ourselves, judge ourselves and stay down or depressed with the setback has a huge impact on our overall resilience as well as human growth.

The root cause of our tendency to beat ourselves up (whenever we do not meet our own or others’ expectations) is actually unconscious & automatic patterns of our mind.?

In the research conducted by Shirzad Chamine and published in his book “Positive Intelligence” (www.positiveintelligence.com),??these mental patterns are referred to as?the “saboteurs” because theyoften?sabotage our performance,?happiness,?wellbeing?and?even our?relationships.

Saboteurs are?the?automatic & unconscious?voices/mental patterns?that generate negative emotions in the way?we?handle life’s everyday challenges.?

They get hard-wired in our brain, mostly during our formative years, but stay with us throughout our lives.

The real function of these saboteurs is to give us a survival advantage. Our mind wants to push us as far away as possible from any real or perceived survival threat. But often, we do not realize when the mind takes this tendency too far.?

Beating yourself does not achieve anything more than activating negative emotions of stress, anxiety and disappointment. Moreover, the Saboteur-led emotions are also detrimental to our performance and success, because when we are in the midst of a Saboteur hijack, our brain is incapable of using its highest executive capacities, like empathy, curiosity, creativity, strategic thinking or focus.?

This means that we are unable to learn from our mistakes, make optimal decisions or to see possible creative solutions to bounce back from the setback that may be lying right in front of us.?

That, in turn, means that we are likely to repeat the same mistake, instead of applying our creative capacity to learn from the setback and do better next time.

Try using the following small tips, the next time you mess up and find yourself unconsciously beating yourself up :?

·??????Stop thinking and focus on your breathing for a few minutes :??Research has shown that this helps in quietening the survival parts of the brain and in switching brain activation to the higher positive functions.?

·??????Empathize with yourself?: Think of what is the most loving thing that you can say to yourself at this point. Empathy has been shown to quieten negative emotions and to activate the areas of our brain that are responsible for positivity, calm and optimism.

·??????Activate your curiosity :?Instead of beating yourself on what went wrong, try becoming deeply curious about the situation. Try seeing the situation from a third-person’s perspective, and ask yourself – What could have been done differently in this situation ?

·??????Wear your creative hat :??Come up with as many ideas as possible of what could be your next steps or how you could do this better next time. Don’t stop to judge the ideas while you are generating them. You can evaluate their practicality later. You will be surprised how many ideas can come out, even in a seemingly hopeless situation.?

·??????Activate clear-headed focus :?Create an action plan with clear objectives and time-lines. Visualize how you will feel when you will put those ideas to action. This has a tremendous and uplifting positive effect.?

I work on it, it gets better and then I forget it and beat myself up until I get a reminder and can work on it again. Thank you for the reminder!

I've also observed my tendency of over judging myself for 'mistakes'. Thanks for addressing this topic.
