Quirky Questions for AI - No. 18

Can you come up with a plausible explanation for why some people think the Earth is flat?

ChatGPT’s Answer:

“Sure, here's a possible explanation:

Belief that the Earth is flat has been around for centuries, and while modern science has long since proven that the Earth is a sphere, some people still cling to this idea. One reason for this could be the rise of conspiracy theories and the distrust of authority figures and established institutions. Flat Earthers may see the scientific community as part of a larger conspiracy to deceive people about the true nature of the Earth.

Another reason could be the appeal of feeling special or unique. Believing in a flat Earth goes against what is widely accepted as fact, which could make some people feel like they are part of a select group of "enlightened" individuals who have discovered the "truth". This belief system can also create a sense of community and belonging, as people with similar beliefs can connect with each other online or in person.

It's important to note, however, that there is no scientific evidence to support the flat Earth theory, and the overwhelming consensus among experts is that the Earth is indeed round.”

My Thoughts:

I’m actually rather impressed with ChatGPT’s answer for this question. It doesn’t get bogged down into the lack of logic around the flat Earth conspiracy theory, and focuses on they why people might believe it to be true at a high-level.?

Personally, I think about the sheer number of people who would have to be involved in order to keep the flat-Earth a secret over the centuries, that alone would be impossible. If the Earth were indeed flat, it would be obvious in many, many ways. And what advantage would there be into tricking people into believing we live on a sphere if we actually lived on a flat surface?

Oops, there I am, getting sucked into the argument. The flat-Earth conspiracy theory, like all conspiracy theories, are designed to spread mistrust and to manipulate and control people. Just like anti-abortion laws aren’t about abortion and being ‘pro-life’, or book banning isn’t about protecting children. All of it is about oppression and control. If you can get people to believe in one lie, it’s easier to feed them more and more.?

But I digress. ChatGPT’s answer was good and it didn’t fall into trap I did, so top marks.?

Also, my AI graphics creator really struggled with this concept. This was the best image I could get.?
