Quinnipiac's School of Communications looks to the future

As I get ready to start my second semester as dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University, I'd like to point out some of what we accomplished last semester.

The faculty has approved the School's first five-year strategic plan. The plan was done from scratch in four months, which shows great collaboration among our faculty! It is ambitious and calls for us to look at overhauling our curriculum to focus on 21st century media jobs. It also calls for new facilities and a greater emphasis on incorporating diversity across everything we do.

This is the first strategic plan in the School's history! I'm proud that we're not satisfied with where we are today and want to be better. This is a communications school with amazing faculty and staff.

We've also launched the Quinnipiac University Podcast Studio, including the hiring of director of community programming. The Studio will collaborate with people across campus and in the community to bring entertaining and informative stories to listeners.

The School began an outreach program where our faculty began visiting Connecticut high schools with media classes. We visited 15 high schools this past semester and did everything from teaching about fake news to editing stories for high school newspapers.

The school also began a speaker series featuring media executives. This series will bring a prominent speaker to campus once a semester. Our first speaker was Alan Murray, the CEO of Fortune magazine.

We've also begun planning for the School's 20th anniversary, which will be later in 2020, with a reunion event planned for the fall and the inaugural induction of our first members into our QU Communications Hall of Fame.

These are just highlights! If you'd like to know more, please contact me at [email protected].

We had a great time visiting the school last month. Thanks for giving me and my family a tour of the facilities. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Would love to get involved.
